Richard Hammond meets the man that threw away $250 MILLION into a landfill!

It’s a nightmarish situation – you mine some Bitcoin onto a hard drive when it’s worth pennies, forget about the hard drive, end up accidentally throwing out the hard drive, and then realising that values of crypto have taken off since then and you’ve thrown away a quarter of a billion dollars! Richard Hammond met up with James, a crypto miner from Wales, who has lost out big time, but is putting together a serious plan to rescue his Bitcoin fortune.

  1. Richard is a ledgend. A proper journalist. Reminds me of louis theroux. He’s just genuinely interested in the stories and follows along and gets fully involved. I can imagine him putting on his gloves and actually searching the dump to help the guy.

  2. Although, i have no issues him doing a legal challenge for an injunction, the question is, once you throw something away, can you claim it back if it goes up in value later on even if someone else claims it? because if you discard something, you give up ownership of it. Secondly, if it was valued at $1.4 million dollars at the time of disposal , wouldn't you check before you throw it away? because people don't get careless if big money is involved.

To sum it up, i think legally, he could lose the case for the injunction because if it was granted, it'll open up a can of worms for similar cases. Personally, I think that he didn't have it in the first place and made it up to gain notoriety because people have done it in the past for very little.

    Who agrees/disagrees?

  3. I am not involved in this and don't know the minutia of the plan but it seems that the most important thing is missing from it. He is simply not selling it to the council. In fact it is dead simple to get the council on board and make a ton (!) of money in the process against which the Bitcoin on that unicorn hard drive will look like back of the sofa change…

  4. When someone truly understands bitcoin for the first time, they become obsessed with it. It is the cheat code to wealth. It may be the closest thing to magic in our universe. You can literally store money in your head with a list of words or even a phrase. If you know someone else's list, you can steal their power. This guy never really saw it's power, he didn't really understand Bitcoin, so he was careless. Never feel sorry for him.

  6. I remember I bought 100 bitcoins when they were going for just over a dollar. Then they went down after that. I formatted the drive the wallet was on forgetting at the time it was on there. At the time I didn't care, these days though, it would be nice. So somewhere in the ethos is 100 coins forever stuck.
