Replacing Forward Cabin Windows! – Emerald Isle: Ep.82 Fishing Boat Refit Backlog

Backlog episode. In this video, we replace our cabin windows. The frames and sealant were allowing water to leak into the cabin. To make sufficient repairs they required a lot of cleaning up. On further inspection, we decided to modify the frames by fiberglassing over and completely sealing them in. Also replacing the windows with 1/2″ Lexan.

  1. I love watching this!!! ❤❤❤gosh you have come such a long way with The Emerald Isle!! Smart fixing up those windows to be less maintenance !! When you were talking about having to Sand down and re stain and varnish every year. It gave me flashbacks from my childhood. My dad brought us a project home one fall… It was just a little boat to take up to the lakes with an outboard motor. The motor was perfect ran great …the boat was a a total mess. He and I spent every Spare moment all winter stripping that boat down in the garage. Underneath layers of ugly paint was a beautiful mahogany boat. It was gorgeous When we got done and everybody would stop us and ask about it when we take it outfishing up on the lakes in California. BUT OMG what a pain in the butt every winter it was Sand it down and revarnish it. LOL
You two remind me a bit of those days with my father and I. Fix it up the boat and going fishing. Of course, we were not fishing out in the ocean and commercially, but you get the connection. I could remember the first time daddy let me drive that boat…Waaaahooo!! Lol

Nice to see you Anita and T !!

  3. A coating tip
Use Cetol 1 as a primer coat, over your window wood, the. Cetol 23 and do a few coats…great stuff. Ive applied on 7 different wood structures. Wood grain is best look, but for a weather coating, nothing beats cetol

  5. Having spent a lifetime in Alaska I shudder whenever I see wood around the water. In California where they have a plethora of good weather and little to do wood looks good. Here anywhere it is outdoors is a problem in the making. First thing I looked for in a boat was the lack of wood and a "hose down" finish. I have tried every kind of product to keep wood going and none of them work. Most bright finishes if not all don't even hold the wood until next year when you have to do it all again. Time consuming and not one you are going to win.
