Repair BROKEN Cast Iron Cylinder Gland | Flame Spray Welding

Using a Flame Spray torch to successfully repair a broken and damaged gland. This gland is off a D10 Dozer blade tilt cylinder which has been damaged because the piston bypass valve got loose inside the cylinder! Repairing cast iron is always a challenge so we will be using our preferred method of metal powder and jet flame spray gun with oxy acetylene to repair the broken gland. We show the step by step process of building up the damaged surface using the flame spray gun before machining the part back to spec on the lathe. This job was a success & our customer is very happy!

In this video we are using:
– UTP Variobond flame spray gun
– Hafco TM-26120G Centre Lathe

  2. What gets me is when they push production so much and destroy parts, like bores, articulations. Instead of just replacing parts it becomes a total huge job and down for a week or more. I've seen this happen over and over. But keeps the machine shops busy!

  4. As always, very instructive your explanations about spray welding.
I've not tried it myself yet, but I was wondering if that kind of welding could suffer easily from delamination, due lack of penetration?
I've read on the AWS codes that the sole aceptable material to repair cast iron is to use nickel alloy, but that's about filling cracks… I don't know how nickel would behavior if used to replace a chunk of cast iron on a piece like that, what do you think?
Any way, it has convey me your indications about why to use spray welding instead of stick or flux welding on cast iron, not only to prevent hard spots for machining concerns but also bubbles on the puddle.
After all, you used cast iron powder only, without nickel?
Cheers from Spain, one more year.
