Rare Barn Find classic 70s Japanese RWD Coupe discovered – will it run after 30 years? In this episode Jonny Smith heads to Darlington in County Durham, where he helps to revive a rare 1978 Japanese coupe – Mitsubishi Colt Sapporo. Kevin, the owner, bought it way back in 1982 and parked it in this garage in 1993 after it required some MoT work. That was the last time it moved. There are thought to be less than 10 Sapporos left in the UK. Will it run?

I discovered this channel a couple weeks ago and have been binge watching the barn finds. I remember you from the Fifth Gear days. I love this channel. Makes me want to find an old car to get running again.
I giggled and clapped my hands when it started! That's a old Japanese automobile for you.
Jonny, once again a fabulous video! They keep getting better, and you keep showing yourself as such a fantastic human being! Cheers mate!
Very cool. We had these in Australia too where they were badged as a Scorpion instead of Sapporo.
My dad had one, KVH515T. Seeing that car bought back my childhood
Someone please help the owner restore this car. He sure deserves it and so does the car
It was called a scorpion here in Australia. I've still got my 77 Datsun 240k,I bought in 1988.
Yes, a barn find ep. What a treat.
My dad was born there!
That’s a sigma scorpion
I had one of these when I was a lot younger…. It was sold in Australia as a Chrysler Scorpion.
Man I haven't seen a Sapporo in years! Used to be a few kicking round NZ roads back in the day.
What an amazing thing to do, the smile on that man's face is worth more than money can buy. I really hope this has inspired him to give his dream some love and get it back on the road again.
Cheers Jonny, excellent stuff as always!
Love these barn find videos
Hands up who can identify the music on that tape then? Someone must be able to 🙂
Oakley Service Station Mitsubishi Owner. Nicky Porter what a great man / friend Mercedes Rally history I think you would be impressed with his private collection
Well worth a search on you tube
Love the owners enthusiasm and love for his car. Really hope he can get it roadworthy. Magic
Absolutely brilliant. Enjoyed every single second. Awesome 👌
Nownots going to rust with that wash.
Be proud of these great old beasts you get started again Jonny- the owners always seem to thrive off your extra bit of enthusiasm. It must be like pure therapy to the car-minded people you’ve helped.
Who knows the back story to some of these, and we don’t deserve to know if it’s not been mentioned on film. But you’ve made a fair few people very happy doing this kind of madness.
And that interior is mad- hope it went back in the garage before it went pink purely out of shock to sunlight!
Splendid. I remember those here in the States as the Dodge Challenger. That's fantastic that it started up and ran so well.
In Aussie it was the Mitsubishi Scorpion. We didn't get the GSR that I remember. The GSR came with the Mitsubishi then Chrysler Sigma which was a 4 door.
Great video.
Nice car this is a Mitsubishi Gallant in New Zealand not a another of them around now
My old man in 79 bought a brand new Skyline 240KGT ,. they are very similar looking and both pillar less coupés.
I think this was called a Scorpion in Australia
I owned a "75 Mitsubishi Galant GTO with suspect the same 2L twin carb engine as this with original factory "Astron 80" rear window decal
what a cracker jonny, hear in australia these were called mitsubishi scorpion the mecanicals on these cars are bullet proof great car !!
Such a great series. I'm not interested in 70s Japanese cars normally but seeing such a time warp example is a real treat. Thanks
This brings back memories for me. My first car was a top of the line 83 Sigma Station Wagon. It had the carpet lined doors, and boot with aluminium rails to slide luggage in.
The steering wheel is the real throwback, the same rubber coated wheel that just disintegrated over time. Didn't help it was kept in the Australian sun.
It just never quit it kept on going. Loved that thing.
We got those in Australia, they were called the Scorpion, 2.6 ltr astron engine, and 5 speed transmission.
Brilliant…
Absolute gold dust😊 How nice to see that genuine excitement and enthusiasm, loved that one, thanks Jonny ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Great barn find, as always, Jonny – your enthusiasm for all things 'automotive' is just a delight.
You mentioned that the Japanese were trying to emulate styling cues to suit the American market – but, is it just me, or does that wrap-around rear windscreen / 3-quarter angle look reminiscent of a British Jenson Interceptor…??? 🤔
Yes, I had one, I think it was a mk 2, CFY 754X, 2.0 GSR, metallic blue with tan interior. Had it from 1985 to 1990.
First off, it just needs a good cleaning and detailing. New fluids in the motor, and already it's driveable. I'm not sure what it would take to pass your MOT.
I owned exactly the same car ( grey interior not tartan) back in 1990. One of the best looking cars ever to come out of Japan. I would love to still own it.
I hope the owner gets it back on the road. Total nostalgia. Thanks.
I would love to see this car as a feature where you restore it Johnny. I certainly don't think I am alone in thinking this ….. awesome stuff.
I was hoping it would be a Datsun Z hiding in the garage, unfortunately not, can't see anything nice about this car.
Always loved these cars, came close to buying one a few years ago.
Known as Scorpion 2.6 in Australia
I do recall the Japanese car industry back then was courting the US market by design – and then Jonny said the same in the commentary.
Love you Johnny. Another great video.
Japanese technology holding up well after all those years
Thats a great time warp. I hope it gets restored
good fun
