Raichu-Line Solo Challenge – Pokemon FireRed

Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100*

Rule details:
— *In gen1, evasion boosting is allowed if the Pokemon does it through means other than learning the move by level up or TM. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed. (This exception is to keep ranking consistent with my legacy videos.)
— I am allowed to manipulate my starter
— I play the game at 4x game speed
— For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
— I am allowed to catch HM users – I can use all field moves
— All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
— In generation 1, I’m allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
— Surge’s trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
— The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
— Saving between league members is allowed
— If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
— I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
— The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
— The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

  1. Butterfree is immune to Earthquake and has access to special moves more effective on Ground/Rock so it's a weird comparison to Raichu. Raichu is crippled due to the abundance of Rock/Ground types. If Raichu had access to Surf (I'm aware if doesn't get it this gen) then it's time would be better. The only way to get Surf is to teach Pikachu via Pokemon Stadium then evolve it and transfer it to Fire Red.

  2. Wouldn't Rain Dance be a valid option for the Champion's Venausaur specifically on Electric Types? Wouldn't go as far as using Thunder instead of the Bolt, but the boost ist still nice, gets rid of the Sun and lowers the threat of Solar Beam significantly. That is, of course, if it's a one and done move for the Rival and doesn't escalate into ping pong. Should the Arcanine be a problem, Rain Dance can also help there, but Extreme Speed isn't really the "better" Move to go against.

  3. Scott, sometimes your lack of game awareness kind of pisses me off 😖
Vs Bruno, you had (almost) exact attack and special attack, but the STAB on T-Bolt really made it much more damaging than Return. Their special defence was kinda greater than the physical defence, but that not made up the 30% difference in base attack power 🙂

  4. For Pokemon that have to grind before Brock, might it make sense to EV grind instead of EXP grind? Like, knock the trainers out first and all that, but grinding for experience might end up being counterproductive by the time you get to the late game. Admittedly, your EV options pre-Brock are limited (only HP, ATK, DEF, and Speed are available), but knocking out Mankeys for Attack instead of Caterpies for HP might've helped the lategame somewhat.

Even if you don't just grind for the specific stat, grinding at route 22 would've been less experience (32.28/battle vs 33.48/battle in the Forest), but the distribution would've been nicer for what you wanted (.45 ATK/.55 Speed for each battle, vs .4 HP/.3 DEF/.5 Speed per battle).

Other issues in later battles, but I think other commenters mentioned most of the improvements. Looking forward to you hitting this game with the full Scott's Thoughts rigor in the future!

  5. You could have gotten past Bruno far faster if you had just used thunderbolt. It has nearly 50% more power than return, and their differences between defense and special defense aren't enough to make using return the better option
