Queensland govt making rental situation ‘even worse’: Qld Shadow Housing Minister

Queensland Shadow Housing Minister Tim Mander says the Queensland government is making the rental situation “even worse” by purchasing housing on the private market and is “not facilitating” growth in the community housing sector.

Data released in November for last year’s June to September quarter revealed over 43,000 Queenslanders were on the social housing waitlist in the state, according to the Queensland Council of Social Service – a rise of 1,600 since the quarter prior.

Last April, the Queensland Labor government committed to purchasing more social houses from the private market.

“The Minister came out recently, overnight, to say that a lot of their funding has gone to emergency funding – that’s not a long-term solution – that’s actually a recognition that there is an issue where people need to be housed immediately,” Mr Mander said at a press conference on Saturday.

“There’s no use for the government going out and buying houses that are already built – that’s just making the rental situation even worse.

“It’s hard to sort of fathom, after two and a half years, why action has not taken place – and you can only come to the conclusion that it’s all about the announcement.

“We have a sector there, right throughout the state, that is biting at the bit to get into helping the government solve these issues, but the government is not enabling them, not facilitating them and not helping them to grow – that’s something that will change under an LNP government.”

  1. This has happened in the USA also. It is the bunker dwellers “elite” that have bought the homes. Then jacked up the prices. The people who sold their homes. “Thinking”’they made out actually hurt their fellow man indirectly. Without realizing there was an agenda.
Remember Claus Swab told us “we would own nothing and be happy” .well the people have spoken. They can’t stop what is coming.
All of the wrongs will be made right.
    That’s why they have bunkers.
But when people want justice. There will be no place to hide.

  2. If funding is the problem then why did the Queensland Labor government hand out to tens of thousands of public servants a cash boost cost of living payment in time for Christmas, in a deal set to cost the state government $350 million a year

  3. Maybe its about time the government actually looked into how many people have spent a lifetime in housing commission properties at the expense of taxpayers, its abused to the max and its not supposed to be a lifestyle . Public housing is absolutely essential but it seems that once your on that gravy train you have a ticket for life at taxpayers expense .

  4. stop bringing people into the country that need the same houses we need. stop selling property to people over seas not living here in the houses. stop allowing people to own 15+ houses, give the rest of us a chance to get one.
if someone owns 6 or more properties, they should be paying tax out the ass and through the teeth. that would prevent greedy grubby people owning everything.
