Russia’s navy, once one of the most prestigious and feared in the world, has been hit hard by years of war and faces the danger of losing its value. The country’s largest submarine, Dmitri Donskoy, has been confirmed as decommissioned, and there are reports of plans to decommission two other submarines, Arkhangelsk and Sevastopol. The fate of the submarine is uncertain, but it is expected to be used at a naval base in Severodvinsk, together with the other two units. The plan and schedule for the eventual destruction of all three boats remains unclear, as disposing of their 190 megawatt oqs 650 nuclear reactor pair is a complex process. The collapse of the Soviet Union, coupled with arms control agreements with the United States, saw the typhoon fleet shrink steadily after 1991. Russia is currently under crippling international sanctions as a result of its nearly year long war in Ukraine, and the country’s government had shown its willingness to delay or even cancel major military projects in order to reallocate funds to higher priority efforts.
