I will dive deep into the dark philosophy behind American Psycho, Breaking Bad, The Joker, Avatar and take you on a tour through the minds of so called “literally me” characters like Walter White, The Joker, Bruce Wayne, Zuko, Donnie Darko and many many more. Why is it that these characters so popular nowadays? Is there maybe something inside of us that is craving to embody the dark side?

Swiss philosopher Carl Jung made the distinction between The Persona and The Shadow Self.

  1. This was absolutely beautfully made. I'm speechless with how well done everything was put. From the visuals to the script. I love psychology and I know the very basics of it, but watching this video helped me understand more about it, and it's just… wow… I'm glad this randomly showed up when I was going through one of my YouTube rabbit holes lol

  2. I’ve been really enjoying your videos so far, this one was definitely one of my favourites! But on the another note, I’d like to see more diversity in the characters you choose to display since I noticed they’re predominantly male. I’d like to know if there other good films that feature well written female, queer, or POC characters.

  3. Does a notion of the sin prevent you from being whole? What if the good is not the one who desists from sin so the sin remains his dark desire, but the one who doesn't need it, who forgets about it living free from it? Or the ideal is not ought to be embodied, but it's the one to exist in culture?

  4. Another great example of a anti-hero or villain per say is speedball and his decent into madness as penance from marvel, he shows us a tragic story of guilt, and redemption a video that explains his story well is on the reply.

  5. hero and villain can be defined as a person who is defined by a series of sins or virtues which in thus, allowing them to be morally good or morally evil. There's a quote I like from : To Kill A Mocking bird "Well, most folks seem to think they're right and you're wrong…."

  6. My problem with Walter White and his "one who knocks" speech is that, yes, in Skyler's world he is the one who knocks, but in the drug world, he's barely keeping his head above water. He's constantly terrified, spends the entire final season on the run from the law and lamenting his past decisions while trying to make things right for Jessie, Walter Jr and Holly. He's clearly out of his depth.

He's able to scare Skyler, sure, but can't scare Gus, the white supremacists or even Mike. He doesn't even scare Saul. And especially not Ed the Relocator. It's just dumb luck plot armor that he takes them all out. He's a false shadow of himself, overinflating his own self importance. A chicken with his head cut off.

I love Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and El Camino and love the Walter White character, but he's not what people conflate him as.
