Piracy in Ancient Greece (audio only).

How did piracy feature in ancient Greece? What was it and how did the Greeks respond?

In this episode I give an overview from Homer through to the Hellenistic. Why not give it a listen and a review?

  1. Another great episode (As usual)! I can never say no to any topic that is introduced with passages from Homer.
The most fascinating takeaway for me is the semi-acceptance that is hinted at. Both in terms of Polis using it to their advantage and the widespread integration of it into the economy and seemingly into society itself.
It very much reminds me of the robber barons I am more familiar with from German history – only on see of course.

  2. BCE – hm what happened ~2022 years ago. I wonder , wait a minute I know Jesus was born! oh and hang about that is when our calendar starts so literally its 2022 years since the birth of Jesus. And to who is the last 2022 years the common era? not muslims they have their own calendar, not people in east asia they have their own calendars too! . but hey we're not just super woke and respectable, we've stopped offended all those european atheists but have we? because wait we've got all our days of the week named after pagan gods and then there are the months some of whom are named after genocidal roman dictators.. dear me. I guess we better take a leaf out of the french revolutions playbook and started renaming days and months! otherwise before you know it we might get accused of being a brexiteer or some thing even more terrible (if such a thing is possible)…
