Pierre Spies – Surviving Blood Clots To Become An SA Rugby Legend | RugbyPass Offload EP 74

We’re delighted to be joined by the original Ultimate Beast in Springbok legend Pierre Spies, to hear his incredible story which has taken him from a close shave with death in 2006 and missing out on the world cup in 2007 to fighting back and becoming a SA legend and being the main clog in destroying the Lions in 2009. We also hear how his struggles on and off the field, have led him to nowadays being a Minister in the Christian church back in SA. Most importantly he reveals his secrets on how became such a freak athlete – at 6ft 4″, 111 kg, and runs 100m in just 10.7 seconds. He is truly a once-in-a-lifetime athlete! Plus the lads give us their take on all the big rugby headlines including – Why did Cowan Dickie miss his medical at Montpellier? Had he been arrested? and Does rugby need more head coaches having a punch-up like we saw in the MLR?

  1. This guy could've done way more, but the bulls totally misused him as a battering ram in the last couple of years. I believe that affected his confidence.

  2. My favourite rugby talk show. Love how genuine these guys are, not shying away from deeper questions around religion and other times asking into failures of players. All done in good spirit and genuine interest. Good job fellows!

  3. Interesting the different personalities that make up a team – and the many paths lives can take ,none less worthy than another. Good job on the interview!

  4. Cape Town is the only city in the top 30 most dangerous cities globally. Pretoria is more safe than most US cities and a very chilled place. The area around Loftus is really nice! Not sure what you are talking about!

  5. Several things to note:
    1. George is a smallish town about 400kms away from Cape Town along the N2. Lovely place and quite quiet although it also boasts a small airport which is cool. And surrounded by mountains and the sea. Beautiful area.
    2. According to stats, Leinster lost to the Bulls 62-7. Stats not going to record what level of team experience was there, nor that they had very few long standing players plus the coaches decided to ditch them. And that is something the club will be branded with in their stats books.
    3. Bulls have played better these past few games and Jake White is a good coach. Must be funny for Pierre to look at the Bulls and still see Jake there coaching away. Almost 20 years on. How funny.

  6. It's nice to see that Pierre Spies is not only a great sporting talent, but such an articulate, well rounded person. Also, as a French, I thought it was a bloody disgrace how he and five other players were let go of by the Montpellier management team.
