The archaeological site of Cabezo Pequeno del Estaño near Guardamar del Segura in the region of Alicante was already inhabited in the 7th century BC. However, the fortifications date back to the Phoenicians who searched for metal deposits in the ground.
The archaeological site of Cabezo Pequeno del Estaño is a small walled nucleus, probably built in the Iron Age. However, the area was already inhabited in the 7th century BC.
Located on a hill , in the area of Rinconada, on the right bank of the river Segura , about 2 kilometers west of Guardamar del Segura in the province of Alicante in Spain. The archaeology writes that from the 9th century A.D. the Phoenicians, a Semitic-speaking people of antiquity who settled in the area of today’s Lebanon, Syria and Israel, settled in the area. However, this does not explain the findings of 3 Phoenician shipwrecks off the coast of Spain at a distance of 80km which have been dated to around the 7th and 6th centuries BC.
The Phoenicians visited the coasts of the Iberian Peninsula in search of raw materials, mainly metals, which they obtained thanks to exchanges with the local population. This trading nation, characterized by dominant navigation techniques and cultural mediators between East and West, established a series of enclaves on the coast. For this purpose, they chose elevated places next to the mouths of rivers and islets near the mainland. At times they built mighty fortresses to protect, store, and redistribute the profits from their economic activities.
South of the estuary, on a small hill, they found the perfect place to build a manufacturing plant: the Cabezo Pequeno del Estaño. The latest studies indicate the coastal and port nature of this site, which was once navigable from the sea and is now silted up by the sediments carried around the river. The enclave appears to be heavily fortified from land access to the south, with strongly deterrent walls.
Evidence of the gradual abandonment of the settlement has also been discovered, and its foundation can be dated to about 700 BC. Both by the ceramic materials found in the abandoned layers and by various dating from the 14th century.
