  1. And 26yrs later Portillo makes train films, Dannatt draws his pension. Never have UK Forces been so small and weak. The army down to about 80k guys, RAF 7 attack squadrons and the navy 19 warships.
One day we will get a bloody nose and it won't be the fault of the lads in the combat units.
The weasels in Whitehall and politicians refusing to fund defence properly.

  2. Just a suggestion…..I reckon Mr Portillo will make a better voice now than he ever did as a Politician, but……Have far less influence unfortunately.

  3. I have a feeling that as far back as the early 1960s something similar was being considered.
I remember being up on the Gulf (Sharjha ) when a couple of RA Bombardiers came ashore from a RN Frigate and did a couple of patrols with us (4RTR) then disappeared just as suddenly
There was a big RAF Base in Sharjha but also a " secret" Landing strip out in the desert big enough to take RAF Transport Command planes which use to flit in out and out (unannounced ) with Para Coys from UK

  4. Great insight into the platoon, but also I found the glimpse behind all the corridors at, I presume, Whitehall, and the discussions that have to be had about finances etc, also equally fascinating!
