  1. I love Rob's Star Trek rants because I both begin agree with him broadly completely but then on some of the specifics I think he loses perspective a bit.

I think the musical episode was great on SNW. For me the problem wasn't the musical episode but that is a musical episode in a snow of only ten episodes seasons. TNG always had these odd episodes it's just they were one of 24.

The episode with Una on trial was fantastic and now negative is was positive . TNG did these episodes quite a bit were the Federation as an institution was occasionally questioned.

Also rhe comments about Star Trek in the future being nothing like now makes no sense. No matter that actual year in Star Trek its about tje contemporary now really that is sort of the point.

How far was TNG in the future but its still related to today as is DS9 which ks essentially a mixture of a couple contemporary-ish political situations.

  2. Great rant, Rob. I'm sorry I had to miss it livestreamed. The discussion with Undead Sick calls to mind a saying that we should not aim for perfection all the time but perfect moments throughout our lives. When I look back on my life, I've discovered I've not had a life in Star Trek but a life with Star Trek moments. I hope others can say the same. 😊

  3. One of these days you’re going to have a heart attack over Star Trek! Mellow out a bit! In the grand scheme of things it isn’t that important to rant about it for an hour

  4. I'm sorry but Section 31 shouldn't even be a thing in the ST universe. The Federation is an organization that deals fairly and above-board with other races, it doesn't need to use subterfuge or espionage and be circumspect in their dealings with other species. I'm pretty sure Roddenberry would've hated the concept of Section 31.

  6. To put 'suspension of disbelief' in perspective: There's a reason you can't just take Lord of the Rings and put, say, an automobile in that world. It doesn't matter that it's fantasy and that it has non-existent/unrealistic elements, such as Orcs and magic. The entire world and setting has been set up to indicate that that type of technology does not exist. There has not been a chain of events that would eventually lead to the invention and creation of an internal combustion engine. And if we were to see something akin to an automobile in LotR or Game of Thrones, there would have to be a concrete and believable explanation as to how that technology came to exist in a world that possesses none of the other industrial infrastructure to support its inclusion in the story.

In "Star Wars", even though much of the story is carried by fantasy and mystical plot devices, we are still given some basic rules on key concepts. "Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?" This lays a foundation for our understanding of how this fantastical technology works as well as its limitations. We immediately get a framework of what is and isn't possible in this fictional world, and thus we are able to understand why characters make the decisions they do within the limitations that they have. This is why hyperspace as a plot element has become pointless in contemporary Star Wars. There are simply no rules anymore. It is a narrative cheat code for the writers to make whatever they need to happen, happen without doing the hard work of sticking to the constraints established by the setting.

Too many modern writers hand wave away the logistics of their world building. They insert anachronistic or unbelievable elements that blatantly contradict our understanding of how that world is supposed to work. Simply saying "none of this is real" misses the point. Whether real or not, good fiction works because it stays faithful to the internal mechanics it has established for the audience.

  7. The collage in the Variety article kind of fits Star Trek in general, a mish mash with no clear direction. With the exception of Picard S3, there's been very little for me to get excited about. I'm not a toxic fan, I'm a 50+ year fan of stuff that stays true to the original concept.

  8. I liked the Chris Pine movies, and was able to get through Season 1 of Discovery (I think I may have made it through Season 2, but at some point couldn't watch it anymore (got cringey)). Tried Picard Season 1 (maybe even part of Season 2, but that was "cringey" too). Have been trying Strange New Worlds, seems "OK" (with a little "cringe" here and there)… but when randomly sampling Voyager (end of Season 4 beginning of 5), Big Difference! Great series, now rewatching Voyager… But I have to say, I did very much like the Chris Pine Star Trek movies… it's the new incarnation of the TV series that seem to be "lagging". But my favorite is still The Original Series… no one has put together the "Cosmic Casting" of the Original Series….!

  9. If they were serious about saving Star Trek, or if they knew what makes it work, they would concentrate on doing one solid series about a ship exploring space. All the attempts to expand the audience by creating new, strange versions of the original have largely failed to garner any significant audience. As if little kids ever had a problem understanding TOS. And are shows about space stations and war or space kids (however good) really Star Trek? They could do "Leonard McCoy Country Doctor", but it really wouldn't be Star Trek. And importantly, despite the constant belittling of Roddenberry, just which of these new shows will ever garner the audience of TOS or TNG? Not to mention merchandising.

  10. Apparently Paramount owns Pluto TV which is decent considering it's free so I wonder if that's making any money for them and if they sell then what happens with Pluto TV?

  11. I tried watching new trek and kind of gave up. I remember Star Trek discovery was on and I would ask why is everyone always crying?

I enjoyed watching Picard season one for the thrill of seeing old friends, but never bothered with season two. Because of your excitement, I did watch season three and it was quite excellent.

Keep up the good work Robbo!

  12. Hack Kurtzman doesn't love Star Trek. Never even understood it to begin with and still doesn't.
Only Star Trek he admitted to previously watching were the action packed TNG movies.
Is only running the franchise to use it as a platform to push his own hackneyed ideology.
