When the fieldmice, voles and shrews accidently break a stained glass window in Toad Hall while playing cricket, Rat attempts to find something else for them to do. He suggests a “Paperchase”. Toad enthuses, with visions of a cup for the winner, and so “The Riverbanker’s Paperchase Championship” is organized. Badger takes charge as Chief Official Starter, while Rat and Mole man the two checkpoints.
One afternoon at 2 0’clock precisely, Badger starts the competitors off. Young Wildwooders, Toad and a late entrant Aloysius Weasel, dash off into the countryside following the Papertrail.
At the first checkpoint, Rat is disappointed to see the Weasel in the lead, Billy Rabbit second and, to his amazement, Toad is third. The Weasel arrives first at Mole’s checkpoint, but Mole can’t believe his eyes when Toad runs in second place, not even out of breath. Billy Rabbit running in third place is puzzled when Mole tells him, because he hasn’t seen Toad run past him.
When the competitors cross the finish line, it becomes apparent that someone has been cheating, and Badger takes charge with some surprising results.
