  1. elden ring was def my game of the year. i know some don't mesh w/ it, and it's far from perfect, but for me there were just so many moments where the game opens up and reveals itself to be bigger than you thought it was. when you first leave the tutorial and raise the door and see limgrave spread out before you with the erd tree dominating the horizon. or when you get caught in a teleport trap and dropped in selia crystal cave and have to sneak your way out into the hellish landscape of caelid, and you look at your map & the already giant world is twice as big as you thought. or when you get caught in that other teleport trap and get a glimpse of the golden city of leyndel, and you map tells you the world is twice as big as that. or the first time you take the elevator down into siofra. or riding down into the mist shrouded lake of liurnia for the first time, with the academy of raya lucaria rising above it all. There were so many moments like this, with a world that just keeps unfolding and unfolding and showing you new spectacles one after the other, in a way that I haven't felt since Hollow Knight.

couple that with souls gameplay, a dizzying variety of combat options, and the the game's willingness to be hands off, to let the player just go where they want and explore for its own sake. it made me feel like I was livingbout my own adventure. GoW & its sequel in contrast felt like someone telling me a story. a good story, but theirs, not mine.

But again, it's not perfect, and i wouldn't argue with someone who just bounced off of Elden Ring. there are too many good games out there to get hung up on one that just isn't clicking with you.
