Our Campervan Is INFESTED! Worst Week Of Vanlife

This USA vanlife vlog is a little different from what we intended to be sharing this week – because our campervan got INFESTED with flies! It was easily the worst week of vanlife we’ve ever experienced.

Welcome to the official Travel Beans YouTube channel! On this channel, you’ll find a variety of travel and vlog content, in which you’ll see us in places like Thailand, Japan, USA, Slovenia, and more.

In 2017 we left home with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a sustainable travel lifestyle happen! We are now living our dream as digital nomads and want to inspire you to create your own story, whatever it may be!

After 5 years of aimless, yet enjoyable, backpacking around the world we found ourselves in New York City battling with depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on. After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle.

Our time spent battling depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. In our vlogs, we talk openly and honestly about our travel experiences, the digital nomad life and depression. We hope our videos can help to inspire you to create a life that makes you happy!

  1. Fly paper roll is better. Less cleaning up, also less toxic. Maybe have to steam clean the van, esp carpet. One fly can lay hundreds of eggs. Hang fly paper spirals.

  2. Yes I had to live in a house after rentakill put poison in my loft OK killed the rats as I lived near a river and neighbour leaving drain cover up amongst rubbish but went months with rotting carcases and blue bottles the smell was horrendous never want to experience it again.

  3. There's something that the flies are laying their eggs on and the flies are the maggots that have come from this. You need to find the food source, which I suspect will be a dead mouse, and remove it before the flies will stop. I'm surprised you haven't noticed any weird smells. The flies aren't finding they're way in, they're homegrown.

  5. We have cluster flies in Georgia and Florida. I see them in August allover our windows. Your bug zapper is a game changer. Cant let even one in our home can get 50 a day just breeding. Feels like war for sure thankfully they are slow and easy to catch.

  6. So I live in Michigan in the lower peninsula where we can be pretty buggy in the summer but the upper peninsula is the land of bugs. If you visit in the very early spring or late fall there will not be as many bugs or winter if you like to do that kind of thing. Sorry if you got the bugs in Michigan there's a reason only 300,000 people live in the upper peninsula.

  7. I wonder where the dead mouse is.. Somewhere in your van providing free food for flies maybe? what comes after the fly infestation ? Spider infestation feeds on the flies mm yum yum! Ahh the cycle of life dont you just love it 🙂

  8. There in between the Walls I had worse then you guys when I lived in the Log house. We had 1 big window in the basement that was infested every spring .. I just wet vacced daily . Luckily none came to the upper levels or anywhere else in the house so I understand your frustrations.UI swear I vaccuumed up at least a thousand daily, most were dead but some were kinda disoriented . Open up the Walls if you can prolly the only solution.

  11. Very funny!

Actually, seriously, do try to remove the fly spay if you can – I lived in a rented place that had had fleas and the landlord sprayed liberally with.. well, I think it was a permethrin type spray, so should have been ok, but anyway I had years of ill health and strange symptoms such as face swelling (!) which disappeared when I moved out. Maybe a coincidence, but…

  12. They look like what I suspect are cluster flies. They leave a sent that attacts MORE DAMM FLIES!!! You are now heading into winter, a time where these little "buggers" look for a warm place to have a mass fly conferance!! So I can confirm your research….sadly.
I have seen them dead in a house ceiling so deep they completely covered to pink insulation batts!!!! good luck.

  13. I've been doing alot of research on van builds and such because I'm about to build one myself and try this living this lifestyle. You two are so hysterically funny I couldn't stop laughing. I don't think I would have been able to laugh through all of that the way you did. Instead I could see myself declaring war and breaking out the flame thrower! LOL Really enjoyed your video I'll have to check out the rest of your channel. Hope the rest of your trip is a good one.

  14. I cannot believe how many times you've sprayed and how many are just literally appearing, seemingly, endlessly! I'm so glad the numbers finally dwindled. And I'm also glad these probably didn't lay eggs. I just hate your American experience has had so many hiccups! Thank you for not giving up. Sending good vibes for all the future adventures

  15. Please tell me you ran everything through a launderette after all that insecticide! Looked super unhealthy – not least for the flies!

I kept thinking, leave the doors open for a couple of hours (in a place that doesn't have a lot of flies!) and most of them will be attracted out into the light?

Really feel for you, though you smiled through it, not fun. Thanks for sharing another adventure!

  16. Flies and other insects are attracted to light colors and especially white.
You leave a light on at night and you have many insects flying around it outside.
During the day white reflects the sun light and it attracts them. Then when you open your door they come in and stay by the droves.
My sons house is out in the country and he gets so many in his house and it is white also.
My ex wife’s house is like 200 ft away but it is red brick and she don’t have much trouble with flies.
