  1. Oda was playing 4d chess with early One Piece. Flashing out the themes and backstories too much would take away from the gradual and mind blowing reveal of the scope of the world and story of One Piece. With each new saga these 2 aspects evolve beyond our previous understanding and having a backstory like Luffys at the beginning would just straight up spoil that excitement and ruin the structure.

Also having Ace and Sabo at the beginning would not only take away from the Strawhats beeing introduced, it would make east blue seem like a side tangent

  2. I love all of your theories because everything you just said is what we were also thinking at that time. While now some of our theories and suspicions are slowly coming true or getting thrown out of the window by Oda. It's just really interesting to think about. You are also officially in the halfway point(in terms of storytelling) so congrats🎉🎉🎉

  3. Speaking about Usopp and Luffy being so close as friends, in an early draft Usopp was going to be the vice captain. That early design is well worth looking up just to see alternate timeline Chopper smoking.

  4. Honestly, i really wished that the Goa Kingdom section should’ve come interspaced between Impel Down or entirely before Marine Ford. It would’ve made me way more invested in Luffy rescuing one brother when he’s already lost one.

  5. It may feel like the flashback would fit so well at the start, but we only care so much and realize the impact of it because we get it at this point. It really gives you that retrospection with a sense of sadness exactly because you feel like, if you knew it earlier, you would've treasured your time so much more but, just like Ace, that time is gone.

It perfectly fits this kind of "you don't know what you're missing until it's gone" which I'm sure that Luffy is just beating himself up over as he wishes he spent more time with Ace, did stuff differently, he looks back and thinks of "what if I did this or that differently, if only I knew what I know now" etc as part of his grieving.

  6. Honestly I think the flashback would have worked better after Impel Down and leading into Marineford. The death of Sabo and how it affected Luffy and Ace would have been great set-up for how badly Luffy wants to save Ace in Marineford itself.

  7. Taking some time before going back to the timeskip is a good idea. People had to wait for a month I believe when it first happened. Also, I like the placement of the ASL flashback. But if it was placed earlier, then it would have to be after Logue Town (probably after the barrel scene?) just so we don't mess with the flow of the story, and so that we get to see how Dragon has appeared in Luffy's life twice now and would create intrigue for him as well as hype for when Ace shows up again and suddenly has fire powers. I think leaving some faces obscured/out of view and not bringing up their names would be better though, like Garp and Ivankov, just so we still get their reveals later on. It would also be a neat way of tying up East Blue as it shows how far Luffy has managed to come in such a short time, and shows us a bit more of his motivation and the intentions behind his goal. But I'm still happy with where it is tbh, it makes Marineford hit so much harder in hindsight

  8. Imo the flashback would be really good inbetween the travel from the women's island to impel down or from impel down to marineford. Tho that may have risen too many flags about ace's death. Also having it in post war gives that cool contrast of "I'm gonna be strong" to "I'm so weak", and the flashback is like us grieving with luffy until remembering his crew. But having it after ace's death makes sabo debut feel kinda forced. "Oh luffy brother is dead, here's another. Oops he's also dead, BUT IS HE?"

  9. I think it makes sense to have luffys extended backstory here as it helps recontextualise what we know about luffy and ace up to this point. It is a second gut punch when we realise what luffy has truly lost.

  10. honestly some of the best takes I've ever seen concerning post war arc, have to admit that I've never even thought about Luffy seeing Jinbei easily handling him as yet another defeat.

  11. I gotta say this arc would not have worked at the start of the series you don't need to know why Luffy does what he does so deeply he is such a transparent figure you immediately understand what's important to him

  12. I liked where the flashback was because while I liked Ace, when he died I was sad because of Luffy and his reaction towards it. Then we get the flashback which not only recontextualizes the summit war saga but the series as a whole thus far, but it also rubs salt in our wounds. Like when I saw the flashback and learned more about ace I was like 'Oh. This is what we lost.' We didn't know how important Ace was to Luffy until he was already gone. It amplifies the greif we feel because we didn't know how much we were losing. If we saw the flashback in the East Blue or at Impel Down or Marineford, I feel we may not have felt the same way we did about Aces death. It's a suckerpunch because we would have like to learn this earlier and it isn't fair that we didn't know before hand- but that was the whole point of Marineford. Not getting what we want and learing that the series doens't play fair.

  13. One thing that always gets me is young Luffy saying "being alone is worse than being hurt", but then willingly takes a break pretty much alone with only rayleigh as company for two years if it means that his friends won't get hurt. He is willing to bear something that is one the worst feelings for him but still does it not for himself but for the others. We literally saw him give up when he realized that he was alone with no brothers left until Jimbei reminded him he wasn't alone and became willing to bear the burden of being alone.
