Ohio authorities release video showing moments leading up to fatal shooting of Uber driver

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office released dashcam footage this week showing the moments leading up to a man fatally shooting an Uber driver. Authorities say they were both targets of a scam.

The shooting occurred on March 25 at 81-year-old William Brock’s home in South Charleston. He called 911, saying that he had shot someone who was trying to rob him.

Brock had received scam calls from someone claiming that a relative of his was incarcerated. The caller eventually began making threats and demanding money, authorities said.

The victim, 61-year-old Loletha Hall, was an Uber driver who had been told to retrieve a package from Brock’s home, a request authorities say was made by the same scam caller or an accomplice.

Hall did not know about the calls made to Brock, authorities said.

The dashcam video from Hall’s vehicle showed her getting out and walking in front of her car while holding her phone and glasses in her left hand.

Moments later, the video shows Hall backing away from Brock. He is seen following her to her car while pointing a gun at her the whole time.

Brock demanded Hall tell him who had made the threatening calls, according to authorities. He also took her cellphone and would not let her leave.

When Hall tried to get away, Brock shot her once, authorities said. Hall is heard in the video yelling for help and seen walking to the driver’s side of her vehicle to get in before Brock shoots her two more times. Brock sustained a minor head injury during the confrontation and he called 911 shortly after he fired the third shot.

Hall was taken to a hospital but later died there from her wounds.

On Monday, Brock was indicted on three counts of murder and one count each of felonious assault and kidnapping.

  1. Interesting how the media is focusing on an alleged prank call instead of focusing on how this man is allowed to have a gun and how no one helped the woman as she was screaming and begging for her life over and over while this evil piece of garbage murders her in cold blood.

  2. This man should never live another free day. He killed this woman without cause, disrespecting all laws known to all, disrespecting the law of God, regardless of religion and making her last moments so terrifying. To tell her he would shoot her in the other leg. Wow, is this what our country has come to? An old lady working as an Uber driver, not sitting at home, living off the taxpayers, but providing for her own. Watching this video makes me sick to my stomach. We Americans can spend billions for the security of foreign countries. What about the security of our fellow Americans? Thank God, this was caught on video. If there was no video, the privilege view would have prevailed.

  3. That woman, posed no threat, also the scammer needs to go to jail to, because they were the inciting incident that lead to this poor woman's death. The scammer has to be held accountable.

  4. And this is a perfect example why not everyone should be allowed to own a gun.

At the very least, gun ownership should include a requirement for a gun safety course (including the part where "you don't pull a gun unless you are going to use it to protect yourself.") and show proficiency in handling a firearm (testing at a gun range).

The 5th amendment wasn't written for the mentally impaired, morons and egotists who think it makes them look like an alpha. smh

  6. Some people are just waiting on an opportunity to use their guns. We see it everyday. His actions were diabolical.
God comfort Loletha’s family and friends. Give them peace.

  7. Omg omg. What the hell is wrong with people. Omg there has to be more training and mental health checks for gun owners. This is just crazy. That poor hard working woman and her grand children and children and family. This is just terrible.

  8. How do you have to take classes, get an eye & driving tests to drive a car but an 18 year old or senior citizen can go buy a gun with no training or evaluation. Who would oppose having for checks for gun owners when it could save their loved ones life. Everyone who should have a gun would have one. Now this mans family is going to watch him die in prison. Omg

  9. 👋am wondering if she's innocent of being the scammer as the man assumed? Reports say she received the same instructions for the package pick up that the man assumed was going to harm him. The instructions were sent from the company she worked. did the man send the Uber scam to himself and somehow scammed an Uber driver to scare himself? So why confirm you wish to carry out that scam vs wonder why you received a suspicious threat from your company to this man',s address? Do we know if she had been his driver previous to this incident?
