Now on YouTube: Joan Tower's Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman Conducted by Jader Bignamini

Listen to the full version here on our YouTube Channel.
Recorded live in Orchestra Hall September 27, 2024. Joan Towers’ Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman was written in 1986 using the same brass and percussion ensemble as Aaron Copland’s popular Fanfare for the Common Man (1942). Written as both an homage to and parody of Copland’s famous World War |I statement of power and strength, Tower’s fanfare offers tribute to women who are adventurers and risk-takers. The piece had political overtones and quickly became a celebration and a reminder of women in music. Musically, Tower’s Fanfare No. 6 starts with an incessant ticking resembling a bomb or a clock that abruptly transitions into an explosive rhythmic motive that influences the remainder of the piece. This performance marks the DSO premiere of Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman.
