NOCTURNE (1999): RESURRECTING A FORGOTTEN SURVIVAL HORROR CLASSIC

#NocturneReview #SurvivalHorror

Nocturne is the epitome of a horror game that’s impossible to boil down into a 2-digit number intended to quantify how “objectively” good it is. Released in 1999 and developed by Terminal Reality, it was technically so impressive that barely any computer could run it remotely smoothly at the time. It’s an incredibly atmospheric horror gaming gem in the truest sense of the metaphor, highly overlooked, neglected and dropped from distribution into obscure abandonware state, that – no matter how you end up feeling about it – will leave an impression on you.
And it’s one that I keep being bummed about that it never received a proper sequel.

  1. If you’re interested in me covering the Blair Witch Trilogy in a future video, give this pinned comment a thumbs-up so I get a feel for how desired such a video would be!

Also while we’re here, here are the resources mentioned in the video:

(Sorry, the latter one doesn’t work with a link or card as far as I can tell so far)

  2. Bought it in 2000 with my b-day money after seeing a review of it on Gamespot TV rerun. Was blown away by the game since it was before I knew Resident Evil had PC ports, even though I played it on a shitty a Celeron office pc it was a fucking amazing experience. It hit all the notes rights. Was pleasantly surprised that Bloodrayne was originally suppose to be a spinoff of Nocturne back in the day.

  3. I have my Blair Witch Nocturne case out for some reason and this vid arrived. It ran like trash on my trash pc at the time and I always got shanked by werewolves at start of game because of my wonderful 5-10 fps.

  4. Blair Witch Vol. 1 was the first horror game I've played. I was about 9yo and that game was one of the main reasons that I have become huge horror nerd. It would be awesome to see your analysis of the whole trilogy!

  5. OK forget everything else, I had crystals in my ear ONCE and I can't even go on a merry-go-round any more.
You have 100% my sympathies for the yarking vertigo and lack of balance.

Also I thought Nocturne was pretty cool.

  6. I owe one of the biggest scares in my life to a certain moment from the voodoo chapter in this game, when a zombie broke the window from the outside while i was exploring this murky wooden creaky house .I was not prepared how loud & crisp that sound was & remember flailing with my arms for a few seconds, almost falling backwards on the floor. I tried Nocturne again few years back and for me the biggest issue still is the damn controls and how the movement feels. But man, what an ambitious cool game, mixing several classic horror settings pretty seamlessly while creating cool world building. The gaming magazines in my country actually gave it pretty high scores, but the main problem they listed was this game was a system hog at launch. Few years later Terminal Reality took some of Nocturne's DNA and made Blood Rayne 1 – the moody environments, engine, cloth physics, dismemberment and blood effects , even the main character up to a point, but fixed the controls and movement.

  7. easily the most in-depth look back at a forgotten landmark… and yet you didn't even ONCE show the optional first-person perspective through the Stranger's goggles…? :')

  8. The moment I set eyes on this game, the first thing that popped up in my mind is Remedy’s Control and Alan Wake. If it ever get a remake, it’s have to be Remedy

  9. is it just me or did gillian anderson get hotter when she aged? also, this games' tone could quite easily be hated by the wrong reviewer – even hated just on account of catching them on a bad day…

  10. damn imagine if The Stranger just rocked up to the Blair Witch movie and just shot the ghost (which obviously didnt happen)

guess the filmmakers in The Blair Witch were just unlucky that The Stranger was too busy killing zombie mobsters across America

  11. Played this and the Blair Witch games because there were demos of it back in the day that came with my PC Gamer magazine… and I could never wrap my head around the controls or get it to run well. So it was quite interesting to revist these games and see what I missed out on, even if that now also makes me sad that I did miss out on such an interesting title.

  12. This is great stuff! And the unexpected shout-out towards the end was a real surprise!

As a brief note regarding limiting the FPS of the game, you don't have to go into the NVidia control panel. DDrawCompat can do this easily (though I must've missed it in my package).

While the game is playing, press Shift-F11 to enter the DDrawCompat config menu and change the "FPSLimiter" to "flipstart(30)". Change the number using the slider. Then click Export to save, and a new config file will appear in the install folder! Alternatively, I've also added a patch in the download link.
