  1. I grew up about 2 miles from his mother's house. I was living there still at 18 yrs old in 1981. Talk about "There but for the grace of God…". I was aware of this monster before, but Thank you for researching the details, Danelle. I learned a lot.

  2. the way you and other true crime people speak about abused children is dehumanizing. he wasnā€™t ā€œborn evilā€. he was abused as a toddler and everything you know about his behavior was told by his ā€œdisciplinarian motherā€. thatā€™s not how psychology works and this way of understanding childhood trauma is directly harming real life children. there is already more than one case of a mother killing her young child because she was convinced her kid is a ā€œpsychopathā€.

  3. Richard makes me think of Carl Panzaram. The one big difference is that Panzaram was not only a man of few words, but was also generally honest and unapologetic about his intentions. Richard, it seems, was a fast talker who relied on being sneaky and manipulative, making him far slimier than Panzaram . It says a lot about somebody who is less likable and far slimier than Panzaram.

  4. How have I never heard of this case?!? When my spouse gets home I will have to ask him about it. He would have been a late teen early 20s living in New Jersey and Staten Island at the time, so I am curious if he remembers this.

  5. If you need an editor I am available in my free time. I am not a pro by any means, but I'm able to at least cut out your "ums" and long pauses and also not cut your words off like they currently are, which does make it very hard to listen to.

  6. How many serial killers can we name and their backstories, how many victims can you name and their backstories? It is really heartbreaking that we know so little about so many lost lives. I can totally understand why you tear up while talking about this. Thank you for your empathy and always being geniune with us.

  7. Hi Danelle! I am off work today and just finishing this episode. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your respect for the victims. I would so much rather watch this video than something thatā€™s kind of silly and cheesy regarding Halloween. I understand people that want Halloween-based stories, but we really need to have more focus on these victims. I understand why you were emotional! I wish we knew more about these women. I do know that Maria was my age. Iā€™ve always lived in NYC so of course Iā€™ve been to the Jersey shore, Iā€™ve been to Asbury park. I went to a Halloween party in 1981 as well. It just breaks my heart that they did nothing but try to live their 18 year old lives. Thank you for drawing attention to the important parts of the story. ā¤ļø

  8. Oh my goodness.
Speaking towards his childhood: I worked in an adoption agency in college, specifically domestic (aka: foster kids). My job was to submit "options" of children to our waiting families (it sickens me how commodified it all is, but unfortunately it's what's worked). That meant I read the family profile and used databases to literally search for children, and then I read the child's profile. I still have nightmares about some of the case files I read, 11years later.
One sibling group in particular still haunts me today: they were 4 and 6. Their history was so horrific that they were labeled an arsonist and a sexual predator. I can't remember which is which but I can't wrap my head around how EITHER is a label to slap on a child so young. After reading their case files I went to the bathroom and threw up, then went home and sobbed for hours. I had nightmares about what these poor children had gone through for weeks on end. I'm not going to disclose further details because it's just too horrific and I'd rather not scar you all or re-traumatize myself.
All that to say: I just don't understand how anyone could treat another living being – a human child, nonetheless – in such a manner that they're broken before they can even read.
I still think about those kids and wonder where they are today. I hope they got and continue to get the support and love that they so severely lacked in infancy and early childhood. I still cry when I think about them.

Also, I'm familiar with the Children's Village because a guy I dated in HS lived fairly close. It's in a beautiful setting and really peaceful; I had no idea the level some kids were at, though. Yikes.

  9. I still can't believe that people argue about the death penalty being a cruel and unusual punishment. That a man should just have a life sentence. What about the victims that were killed? Do you think they had a nice time being killed? It irritates me!

  10. How on earth has this guy stayed under the typical serial radar? Possibly Over 100 victims and he is not up there with Bundy or Gacy? Unreal. I was 18 in 1983 and in Maine so you were spot on about the hitch hiking and general trust at the time. It was, however, starting to change. Thank you for bringing this forward to the light again. The victims need to be heard. They need to be remembered. No matter how long itā€™s been.

  11. Amazing case retelling Danelle, he is one of the less talked about killers for sure. Im still reeling from you Crime After Crime announcement – that it will be ending in 1 yr, I absolutely love that and have done from episode 1 šŸ„ŗšŸ˜¢

  12. Itā€™s so cute to hear you butcher the names of places in Jersey lol but this was a great video and I whole heartedly agree with you about knowing information about the killer but none about the victims itā€™s sucks

  13. Thank you for speaking with such compassion about the victims. Too often we focus on the murders and their names, but itā€™s the victims who canā€™t speak for themselves that need us to continue to say their names. My heart goes to those whoā€™s names are unknown, we wonā€™t forget you.

  15. Hello I came across you're video as I saw your thumbnail for the video. Maria Cialella was a friend of mine in highschool. She was such a sweet girl and the I still remember the last time I saw her which was at school and her beautiful smile. I want to thank you for your research and your compassion that you put into this video and your sweetness and sensitivity towards the victims and their friends and families. It's very much appreciated. You didn't sensationalize and you stuck to the facts. If a vid like this was to made I'm glad it was by you who showed such compassion. Thank you. Maria Cialella and the other victims are forever in our hearts.

  17. Parts of this went down literally where I grew up and lived my entire life until last year. Youā€™ve mentioned the actual town I grew up in, plus many of the surrounding areas that I shopped at, have friends whom live in, and that Iā€™ve spent time in. Yet I have never heard of this case. Wow.

  18. Well, hereā€™s the way my mind works, and please donā€™t think Iā€™m trying to make light of the horrible things he did, butā€¦ when you were talking about Richard drinking and gambling at the age of 8, Lampwick from Pinocchio flashed through my mind. šŸ˜Š
