NASA: Massive segment of the Sun breaks off; video captured by James Webb telescope | Oneindia News

The Sun has perpetually been a subject of interest for astronomers all over the world. Now, a new development has confounded scientists. An enormous portion of the Sun broke off of its surface and created a tornado-like swirl around its North Pole. Though scientists are trying to examine how this happened, the video of the development has startled space scientists. The unusual phenomenon was captured by NASA’s James Webb telescope. Last week, the video was shared on Twitter by a space weather forecaster, Dr Tamitha Skov.

  1. LOL said the breakaway chunk was seen thanks to the Jame Webb Telescope – the last thing astronomers would want it to point the James Webb at the sun – that'd wreck the whole thing.

  2. I'm not gonna lie last night I fell asleep and about 9 or 10 yesterday am and I fell asleep and everything was black in my dream and it felt as if something hotter and hotter was coming towards me, however couldnt see anything. It kept coming towards me and got hotter and hotter till the point one side of my face, "the skin" started to boiling and as something from a very far distance started coming near me at the same time but fast and started, " I'm coming". I instantly flickered back awake like a light switch scared out of my mind!!! I'm being dead assssss!

  3. Error. The JWST was not designed to take solar imagery, it's purpose is to capture details about the cosmos inside and outside our galaxy.
That aside, the sun's radient energy would damage the mirrors, an optic especially one that utilizes mirrors would over heat causing said damge.

  4. How did the James Webb telescope captured that? It's a highly sensitive infrared telescope that's purposefully located to hide its instruments from the sun all the time.

  6. Broken off or something is hatching out of it like when an egg is hatching, a piece of the egg shell breaks off first…Or the solar system is falling apart or going through a renewal rebirthing process or end..

  7. James Web Telescope and solar observation in the title ! Lack of credibility ! India News… come on be more accurate and check your facts before propagating such errors.

As other people mentionned, the JWST was designed to observe the space in the infrared. The design of the telescope includ a SOLAR SHIELD of 5 sheets, to avoid the "heat radiation" of the sun.

To capture infrared radiation, this telescope should be refrigerate at temperatures near the absolute zero about 20 º Kelvin.

How can a news channel make such a enormous mistake ?

  8. If this was supposedly caught by JWST, then i wonder why NASA is blocking the sun's light and radiation with 4 huge sun shields. Also JWST is located at L2 in the constellation of the sun and the earth. The earth being between the sun and JWST and the telescope facing outwards of our solar system. I suggest not to sensationalise and to check facts. It's sad to see the very fascinating place which is space being perverted like this.
