Three years ago, Myanmar’s military overthrew the country’s democratically elected government, ending a short-lived period of imperfect democracy, and starting a full-scale civil war. So, what’s been happening in Myanmar, and can the country break apart?

  1. world underestimated power of myanmar people.

  2. Honestly, although I have only a basic idea about this civil war, I think the best way forward, and the way to a lasting peace, would be for Burma to become a democratic, federal constitutional monarchy, similar to the Spanish system. I saw a documentary about the old deposed monarchy wanting to become relevant again, so it would be best for them to replace the military junta and become a national unifier and a political referee. That way the junta will never become a dangerously selfish force again.

  3. The states should just break up and have their own country at this point. They never wanted to be a part of Myanmar. They've always wanted independence. But in the end they got tricked into signing a pact that later turned into them into selling their souls to the Burmese army LOL.

  4. I imagine if the rebel groups get to a point of near victory china will likely sprout more conflict between the groups in hopes to use a communist aligned group to create a useful state to exist in the event they lose taiwan. Its easy for these groups to claim unity for democracy's sake until they beat out their main opposition, only to turn on each other. But maybe I'm just a pessimist.

  5. After the British Empire absorbed the different tribal regions of what is now known as Burma it was called The Union of Burma, so these different regions have always fought to get their Independence back.
As what happened anywhere the British Empire poked it nose into independent countries far from the UK.

  6. As someone who's been occasionally living in the Northern Thailand and occasionally getting The Irrawaddy reports, I have to say this is great example of a video that, despite the bombastic delivery, does not add ANY new information. Everyone here knows that Myanmar could fall apart.

There are basically two salient questions here (putting aside the potential ethnic violence which in my mind is rather unlikely for a number of reasons).

The first is whether the collapse can occur without the junta having been completely ousted. The regime could collapse rapidly or it could hold out in the Naypidaw-Mandalay region for a very long time. Naypyidaw was specifically built as a fortress city with this contingency in mind. Although without the port of Yangon it will be tough.

The second is to what extent the PRC will be able to exert influence in the territory. Only Kokang or beyond. It's quite evident for anyone watching the space that the Northern Shan groups are aided by the PRC intelligence services who are bound to have a very different agenda from that of the NUG. The Kokang region has a weird economy that's completely detached from the rest of the country.

The economic base of the Tadmadaw continues to shrink and without the calibrated support from the PRC its days are numbered.

  7. I wish them the best of luck. But I have a feeling that some of these separatist groups are actually Chinese backed. I think China may even be recognizing that the military junta has to go but that doesn't neccessarily mean a western and democracy loving power will take its place. More than likely, it will be Chinese friendly forces in power after this. Especially after you mentioned some of these semi-autonomous western regions use Chinese currency and have no allegience to neither the military or the government in exile.

  9. A lot of people don't understand that we can't have a federated union if we can't get the many rebel armed forces to turn in their guns or incorporate them into one single national military. We are only supporting the balkanization of our own country but people here can't see beyond their hatred for the junta and trust in western ideologies that has plague the Burmese media. When the tatmadaw is gone and the country is still in ruins, the people has only themselves to blame for selling out and dividing their own nation.

  10. I’m very much appreciated all constructive comments without blindly blaming on Myanmar people as genocides and karma returns to you.
I was sick of seeing those kind of comments in most YouTube videos about Myanmar.
We are already too painful and numb living with terrors and civil war. Those blames are not helpful.

Burmese people also love their country, want to live peacefully in their home with their families.

I myself is far away from my family for 3 years , I could not return easily as I deeply want to.

We want to end this conflict not by giving up to Military.
Coz we know how they are cruel, stupid and irresponsible.

Not all military government are the same .At least Thai people can live peacefully without terror under their regime.

To our neighbors, thanks very much for hosting our brothers.
They will return home when we restore our freedom. We won’t forget your gratitude.

  11. China plays double dipping. She supports the junta previously but now she secretly support the rebels.By hedging she will control Myanmar no matter who win.
Myanmar is geostrategically important to China. She has to control it at all costs.

  12. I am glad Myanmar has been receiving attention. I really wonder why almost all media are predicting or guessing about the future of Myanmar breaking up and how it could be unstable, but doing nothing substantial in helping the people and the ethnic groups fighting the junta. The humanitarian aids still go through the military, the countries still acknowledge and meet the junta, etc. I think they should focus more on the present. What Myanmar will become after, is definitely not clear cut, but at least 4 ethnic groups have signed mutual agreement with NUG, so we shall see.

  13. No , No Intention for split or disintegrated Myanmar Country… WHAT'S THE FINAL PLAN ON political system shall be / is to A Democratic Federal Union Government… Each State , will be Invited To Join the Union… Some States can join " The Union " but they do not need to be A Federal System of GOVERNANCE… Just a Political System BASED ON DEMOCRACY.
