My first Vocal ANALYSIS of Skin from Skunk Anansie!

So many students, patrons and you from the community have been mentioning Skin of Skunk Anansie for years, yet she never rose to the top of the list. Thus, this “My Choice Tuesday” we’re going to find out what I’ve been missing, and there’s a lot! There is so much expression and depth in her voice, and yet the lyrics are so haunting that it’s near impossible to not feel choked up!

Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Skunk Anansie for the first time, performing “Weak”.

  1. Listening to Skunk Anansie after all these years has reminded me of another band I loved in the 90s, Daisy Chainsaw. Katie Jane Garside was the singer with daisy chainsaw and over the years has sung with Queen Adreena and Ruby Throat, could be an interesting dive to see how her voice has aged.

  2. You have to do Adam Duritz from The Counting Crows. No singer lives their songs lyrical content like Adam. So much emotion in his performances.

Check out their performance of Round Here on the Howard Stern Show, one of the greatest acoustic performances you'll ever hear.

  3. Skin has one of the greatest and most unique voices to have come out of the UK in the last 30 years. I don't think the bands get the recognition in the media for the impact they made to the UK music scene.

  4. Weak is probably their most mainstream popular song that they're known for its good but not their best, hedonism, and Charlie big potato are two more greats by skunk anansie to check out next hedonism is on the softer side while cbp is heavy industrial style

  5. I saw Skin perform many years ago when she guess sang with a group called Therapy? she came on a sang a song with the band that unfortunately I can’t remember but her energy and stage presence was amazing and at the end of the song she took a massive leap of the stage into the crowd.

  6. This song is from the 90s, I was lucky enough to see Skunk Anansie for the first time live this year. Skin still sounds as good, and the whole band are still amazing.
Please find some recent live songs to compare.

  7. I think Skin has the biggest mouth to body ratio ever. She's quite small. One of my favourite concert memories is from Skunk Anansie at Quart '99. I was stood center front by the fence and Skin jumped down from the stage into the photo pit, right in front of me, she reaching me to my shoulders in height, climbed the small steps on the fence and belted me in the face. I still get the chills from thinking about it.

(The next act on stage was Marilyn Manson, which was a let down after SA's show of force)

  8. I love skin she scares me in all the right ways it’s like watching a high wire act and yeah more skin please she is easily in my top five female vocalists along with Adele and Alison moyet floor Jansen

  9. Skin is a sick vocalist! My favorite work of hers isn’t with skunk anansie, it’s the song Meat by Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath. It’s an awesome song. He also did one with Peter Steele.

  10. I think this is the first comment I ever did on any YT channel but I feel obliged to point out "You'll follow me down" by Skunk Anansie for further – and more emotional – performance by the fabulous Skin and the awesome band. I have had zero interest in actively singing but your heart warming way of analyzing the artists and songs that have left an impression on my life made me see the error of my ways. Even though my active singing is limited to the shower and singing to my daughter to put her to sleep. Please keep doing what you're doing!

  11. There was no auto tune in the 90s, not for bands like this. The rawness of the vocals was super important. I’m a bit annoyed you focused so much on the video, I was looking forward to hearing what your thoughts were on her vocal runs but you missed them because you were preoccupied by what was happening in the video, especially with the little kid. That was really disappointing.
