Moon base vs Mars colony

Everyone is expecting that in the next couple of decades we will expand beyond Earth, either by establishing a Moon base or a Mars colony. Many famous persons, such as Elon Musk, are pushing for the reality where we have a Mars colony. But is a Mars colony the best first thing to do, or should we look closer to us? The moon is the closest celestial body and it implies an easier task of establishing a foothold there. What are the advantages and disadvantages when looking at building a human outpost on either the Moon or Mars?

  1. Which one? Neither.
Tera-form the ever growing deserts on this planet first.
Once every human being has a HOME to go home to, THEN we can invest tons of money, personnel, time, effort and brain power on space bodies.

Homelessness is skyrocketing and only the wealthy and the powerful are able to change this.
