Miriam Nabakwe: A Lesson In Finding Purpose After Being Auctioned

Miriam Nabakwe is a food and beverage manager who has worked for leading restaurant chains and hotels in Kenya such as The Tamarind Group, Dorman’s and The Fairview Hotel. Despite her success in employment, she chose to go the solopreneur route… and after a series of bad decisions, shortly found herself facing the auctioneer’s hammer. She has since recovered and gone on to launch a highly successful western Kenyan cuisine restaurant called Kienyeji’s. She tells us how she found her way back home.

  1. Miss Nabakwe is very open and hasn't withheld any lesson. She told us that at a vulnerable point after losing millions to a business partner, someone took advantage of her and got her into a relationship. Key lessons for me:
    1. At your weakest, watch out for there will be people trying to take advantage of you.
    2. Focus on and obey your purpose 100%, she finally DECIDED to stopped doing well paying consultancy gigs to focus on traditional vegetables. "pick one thing that you will run with and TAKE IT TO THE END."
    3. Be positive despite the difficult times and tough lessons
    4. Speak up and there will be some friends willing to help as much as they can
    5. Readjust – there's no shame in moving from Hurlingham to Kawangware and starting all over again
    6. Sometimes, it's not the devil at work, but just our bad choices
    7. You have direct access to God – pray!
    8. Seek professional help, don't make decisions blindly
    9. Market your products/services. Be shameless.
