I would also like to thank James Clinton Howell’s classic MGS2 analysis, ‘Driving Off The Map’, for being personally inspirational – you can read that here:

Thank you for watching. BLEM! :3

  1. It's amazing watching this decades after I played it, and seeing just how many suspect things happen long before the truth of it becomes clear. I was very much still a young kid who wanted MGS again and thought Raiden was whiney. I hadn't realized how much Kojima was modelling him after the "fan boy," yeah. It really does make the child soldier stuff hit so much harder and sharper.

And yeah, the player on average won't be able to relate to him. But the broad commentary dovetails very well with molding children into soldiers, and we, the player, are being seduced into the desire to be a soldier. It's amazing how they pull the power fantasy rug out from under the player while still empowering an actual child soldier to be their own person outside of the reward "to be solid snake." It models behavior for owning the power you do have, and letting go of what power you just can't have or shouldn't really desire to achieve.

  2. This makes me wonder (and hope) if we will see a Lucky Bunalaysis of the rest of the Kojima Metal Gear series.

I say this curious about your thoughts about the follow ups and the rest of the series. Especially as someone who's never played past MGS1 (and only seen a long play of MGS2 over a decade ago).

  3. I went in knowing mgs2 had some important and lasting things to say about modern society as we know it today, and not only was that validated, I now believe it is one of the most important pieces of satire in the 21st century full stop.

  4. i like that this important book exists in the Metal Gear universe and it's written by a character from Metal Gear Solid 1 who's *completely missable* also trailer footage showing Snake in the Plant chapter Jonathan Frakes voice It's totally made up. It's fiction. It's a total fabrication. It never happened. Not this time. It's a fake
