Maui death toll rises to 55 from fires, town of Lahaina decimated



Maui residents who made desperate escapes from oncoming flames, some on foot, asked why Hawaii’s famous emergency warning system didn’t alert them as fires raced toward their homes.

  1. That thumbnail is one of the most horrifying pictures. Front street in front of the outlet mall headed north to join Honoapiilani and head north to escape, but the fire caught up to them. Are those the people that had to jump in the ocean? The county should collect names in the shelters ASAP this 1000 unaccounted for figure is alarming, particularly with the cell phone loss.

  2. And the means of alerting via cell is another failure. In the Malibu fire of 2018, city hall sent the same evacuation alert text, but I didn’t get it because power was down and I don’t have good cell (use WI-FI to get signal and no power means no Wi-Fi). I knew to bug out when I saw neighbors with better cell reception packing up vehicles.

  3. This is what happens when the government is in control. The government caused this. Absolutely unlawful and horrible. Someone caused this and it’s a shame we let this type of BS happen.
