Matthew's Infancy Narrative Is A well Crafted MYTH | Aaron Adair PhD

Matthew’s Infancy Narrative Is A well Crafted MYTH | Aaron Adair PhD

The Star of Bethlehem: A Skeptical View is an analysis of the astronomical portent found in the Gospel of Matthew which supposedly led the Magi from the East to the birthplace of Jesus. Throughout history, people have tried to connect the Star to real, naturalistic phenomena, as well as to explain it in other ways. Adair takes a thorough look at all of these explanatory attempts, using the tools of science and astronomy, and finds them fundamentally wanting. Take a trip through the heavens above with Adair as he critically explores many centuries of flawed hypotheses, looking to answer the question “Did the Star of Bethlehem really exist?” This book is at the conjunction of science and religion.

  1. You will notice Mathew also records 4 female gentiles in Jesus genealogy and 4 of them were claimed to have performed sexual sin . Adultery prostitution etc . . Mathew strays from Jewish tradition of recording lineage through the man in order to to point this out and also records gentiles .

It echoes when the sons of yhwh in genesis 6 who are elohim . Took human wives which is sexual sin . Elohim marrying human women. Because of the transgressions of the elohim . Yhwh gives the gentiles over to other gods . This is essentially saying Jesus will fix the divide of nations ( Babel ) he will forgive the transgressions of the gentile nations and unite them once more with Israel as it originally was before yhwh alloted Israel as his chosen people ..

Mathew is doing something really interesting

    Edit btw
The gospel authors aren't liberal . They are doing what is normative in their time . This is status quo practice they aren't being inaccurate or deceitful . Literate Jews at the time would know exactly what they were doing .

  2. Great interview.
Please consider adding Makkhali Goadala to discussions of this topic. He was an Indian ascetic teacher concurrent with the Buddha and the beginning of Jainism. His father was a holy man and he was born in a cowshed as his parents couldn’t find a more suitable place. Maybe a coincidence, but maybe also part of the trope or cultural conventions for spiritual teacher.
    Thanks 🙏

  3. Btw I'm a conservative Christian and I do believe Mathew is participating in parallels . Just not with greek / Roman literature but with his old testament . But I see this differently . I see Mathew as learning about the life of Jesus and looking for parallels to Jesus life in the old testament using conventional.jewish interpretive practices . Not inventing fiction

I also don't think Mathew counted incorrectly . He did it on purpose . Ancient Jewish love to play with numbers and sets of numbers . In fact they didn't really care about chronology either

  4. The virgin birth is so important to Christianity – because it proves Jesus divinity and his validity as a pure sacrifice for sins – that both Mark (the first gospel written) and John (the last gospel written) leave out the idea entirely. Neither gospel says anything about his birth, let alone his supposed miraculous birth.

  5. Great presentation.
I wonder how well this would go over in your average church.
I imagine that pointing out how this birth narrative is an obvious literary device made to foreshadow the end of the story might not end with a bunch of smiles.
But then again, I feel like most people wouldn't even notice so long as you didn't explicitly spell out what you were doing.

You could always call the foreshadowing "part of god's plan". But then that means that Jesus, and by the transitive property god, doesn't have free will! Gasp!

  6. Yeh all very shrewed of 'Mathew', still a very incoherened story. I heared nothing new here, except it is rather disappointing turn of dr. Ardair. There is no need to be so admiring. There is not much to admire. As literature it is lousy, as history an embarrisment, as religion nonsense as is all religion, as morality a failure for the most part.

  7. I wish all skeptics would see this. I can't tell you how exhausting it is to regularly explain that the Gospel authors knew the context but used a special method of interpretation. So many refuse to believe this just because it's coming from a believer. This is a much-needed video.

  8. The morning star is Venus. Woman cloaked in stars is space, the black vastness where something comes from nothing. The virgin/maiden. Stars/light being the son of the father. God being the father seeding the the goddess/Mary/space with the son/sun.. follow the light

  9. Jesus is a god, like the pagan gods, but is like Gizmo and the gremlins as they are transmogrified to evil, demanding blood sacrifice and validating power structures, while Jesus is still good. He was born surrounded by animals because he's a nature deity who loves God's creatures. The star was his soul going to enter his body with the first breath, as souls do. The new testament corpus is daughter to the old testament corpus, thus like genetic structure, many memes and memeplexes from the old testament are reproduced but in different context, creating a new myth with different phenotype. The language of spiritualityism is highly metaphorical, like the tamarian language from the star trek episode Darmok. There could be introgression from pagan memeplexes also.
