Existing capabilities of SU-30 MKI

What makes the Indian Su-30MKI different from the flankers (Su-30 combat aircraft) operated across the world is that it is a beautiful integration of various weapons, sensors and avionics from all over the world. A lot of new equipment has also been incorporated into the Sukhoi fleet during the last two years including the Spice-2000 series of precision-guided weapons which was used by IAF Mirages during Balakot air strike.

The other three weapons integrated with SU-30 MKI which takes it class apart is BrahMos, Astra Mark-1 and Rudram-1 anti radiation missiles. The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile launched from the Indian Su-30 MKIs can hit a target up to 450 kms and another version of the missile having range of 700 kms and beyond is under development. The long-range air-launched BrahMos can take down enemy air defence systems by staying much out of their reach.

60 SU-30MKIs have already been upgraded with BrahMos and the process is still continuing. A proposal for upgrading 20 additional SU-30MKIs has also been proposed which is almost one-third of the SU-30 MKI fleet under operation.

The defence ministry has also cleared the acquisition of the next-generation anti-radiation missiles for the Su-30MKIs which would enable them to strike enemy radars from more than 100 km ranges. In November 2022, ANI has reported that the Indian Air Force has moved a proposal worth over Rs 1,400 crore to the government for acquiring Rudram next-generation anti-radiation missiles (NGARM) to search and destroy enemy radar locations. The missile has a range between 100-150 km. Further the integration of Astra Mark-1 missile having range of 110 km and a maximum speed of Mach 4.5 has brought back the air superiority in favour of SU-30 MKI. In May 2022, the MoD has signed a contract with M/s Bharat Dynamics Ltd. for supply of ASTRA MK-I and associated equipment for the Indian Air Force & Indian Navy at a cost of Rs 2971 Crores under Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.

Apart from weapons, the SU-30 MKI is equipped with advance digital radar warning receiver called Dhruti RWR or DR118. It is a 6 digital RWR integrated across the airframe of the fighter jet providing it 360 degree coverage and early warning against the radar homing missiles. On 23rd March 2023, the MoD has signed contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), at an overall cost of approx. Rs 950 crore to supply 129 DR-118 Radar Warning Receivers (RWR).

Upcoming capabilities of SU-30 MKI

In coming years, Indian Air force has planned series of upgrades on SU-30 MKI which is going to further improve the capabilities and lethality of the fighter jet. In May 2018, the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) had accorded approval for undertaking design and development of the Long-Range Dual Band Infrared Imaging Search and Track System (IRST) for SU-30 MKI aircraft under the ‘Make II’ sub-category and subsequently, for procurement of at least 100 IRSTs under ‘Buy (Indian-IDDM)’ category.

Uttam AESA Radar

AESA radar is going to be the most important upgrade for SU-30 MKI. Earlier it was reported that the SU-30 MKI will be powered by a Gallium Arsenide based AESA radar. In August 2023, It has revealed that the version of Uttam AESA radar proposed for integration with SU-30 MKI is going to be based on Gallium Nitride. The GaN based radar are more efficient and consumes less power than GaAs based radars.

The Uttam AESA radar is being developed for SU-30 MKI will have much larger number to T/R modules due to the larger diameter of SU-30MKIs nose cone. It is expected to feature 1600 T/R modules. The process of integration of Uttam AESA Radar on SU-30 MKI is expected to commence from 2026 onwards. The integration of the UTTAM AESA radar will bring back the Sukhoi dominance in the sky in Electronic Warfare spectrum.

  3. After Su 30 mki upgrades it will be a formidable opponent, enemy air forces will fear these beast, GaN aesa radar, bramhos and bramhos ng, AL 31 engine upgrades, new stealthy nose cone, avionics and software upgrades..su 30 mki is a mini bomber has longer range and greater weapon carrying capacity like no else, even chinese su 30 mkm are not that capable..they will be a headache for PLAAF and PAF for many years to come..

  4. We love upgrades. SU 30 MKI is probably already zoo of several systems and we will continue to update/upgrade and changes. In few years you need to find which was the original component.
The BAE system m777 is in induction phase and we already asking for upgrade to 155 Caliber instead of ordering additional 150 units with higher caliber….wow….Good planning
