Martian Gothic: Unification | Bizarre and Maddening

Martian Gothic: Unification is one of the more fascinating survival horror titles I’ve played. For all the wrong reasons.

A fever dream feels appropriate in describing my experience with Martian Gothic.

It’s one of the many Resident Evil clones that popped up in the late 90s to early 2000s. Resident Evil on a Mars base is its unique spin. It’s intriguing, engaging, plenty atmospheric with interesting ideas.

Of course, interesting ideas depend on the execution. Well, the execution of Martian Gothic is interesting, to say the least. Most of it is not positive.

Yet I can’t help but be fascinated by Martian Gothic. Not in the sense that “it’s so bad it’s good”. More about a small team biting off more than they can chew. They tried to write cheques they couldn’t cash. Both from a figurative and literal standpoint – this would be the final game by developer Creative Reality. They shut down after its release.

  1. When my local rental store went out of business this game was $4. I was a kid and internet was not available to me. I never made it past the first 30 min. Thanks for putting yourself through this so I didn't have to

  2. I played a game like this back in the day but cant remember what it was called. All I recall from it was the intro cut scene had you and your humanoid robot friend infiltrate a facility and he gets captured behind a locked door so you have to go the other way and the next room had a big spinning fan that you could fall into and die.

  3. On one hand, this game looks absolutely awesome. Resident evil in space.

On the other the gameplay looks like it has so many issues that I don’t want to touch it with a 10 foot stick

  4. Always found this game interesting and, in a way, would love to see a proper remake with lots of love.

Also Kenzo is supposed to come off as detached due to being an infomesher. Forgot if an audiolog or one of the computers explains repeated info meshing can lead to one becoming detached from people and the world.

  5. I actually just finally discovered Ross pretty recently, even though I watched his Games As A Service = Fraud vid a few years back. Turned out I had been missing the best gameplay-type vids on YouTube! I love it when a creator I enjoy reveals liking another creator who I also enjoy. I'm not entirely sure what connections my ape brain makes for this effect but no point in questioning the magic of science!

  6. I’ve always thought of myself as an expert player in the genre and played them all as they came out. This game was just too difficult to get through, nothing made any sense at all.

  7. I don't know if this game "deserves" a remake, but I'd definitely love to see one. Interesting, but flawed, I could see it turning out really well if it were adapted into something new.

  8. I love how this is the only review channel apart from mattew that uses in-game audio cuts for something that contributes something of value to the video, let me explain.

The bits of where you stop narrating and you instead put some scene or dialogue in the game, where it contributes something the actual video like showcasing the character's personality or a highlight of the plot.
Not only you do it just as perfect as mattew does, but you never overuse those, or make it louder than the volume of your voice is, something that so many channels ignore, like Gmanlives (i genuinly can't stand this guy, he has like 2-3 minutes only of these audio cuts, which most of those are supposed to be "FUNNY" when in reality are just annoying, unexpected and immersion breaking.)

Also i wanted to mention the fact that you never beg for subs, likes, or comments, which is trully commendable these days, which very few channels do.

That finishes off my rant, i appreciate your content, it really makes me feel old becouse of how much you resemble to mattew's content and brings back memories to the gold days of youtube where you could have criticism about a certain topic.

  9. Remember buying this on a recommendation from a game store worker a couple years back when I first started collecting. I played for the first hour and got frustrated and have not touched it since, honestly it is a good game if you’re itching for some lesser known survival horror from back in the day.

  10. Such a pity. The game really had some potential.. but the clunky mechanics just made it so frustrating. I can remember just not being able to pass by some zombies because you couldn't push them back far enough, or couldn't push them to the floor.. you'd just continuously get bit.. Love the setting though
