I remember that Pokémon Black White/Black 2 White 2 did that and it blew my mind when I realized.
Mario games always have the best soundtracks! This is so cool
Wait, did they hire Smooth McGroove for the soundtrack, I think I hear the voice
There's also an unique yoshi version of each level's theme
this is such a comfort game already
In relation to the map music changes. W6 evolves as you delve deeper. And the theme at the very bottom is sick
Not to mention when you are in elephant power a brass track plays instead of the main melody
They did that on Yoshis new island
Pokemon black and white do the same thing with the drums stopping when you stop.

the percussion thing is just like in pokemon black and white!
I always loved those changes in the music through the series, like yoshi drums in SMW, NSMBWII/U and Baby Yoshi singing in NSMBU and now those from SMBW
the running drums remind me of pokemon black and white! i don't remember if this happens in cities but in a lot of routes the music ads drums when you're walking :]
Kinda like how they do in SMW with the Yoshi drums. It's neat stuff.
They did the percussion on movement in Pokemon bw and bw2 as well!
