The only reason the civil war was fought was to EMPOWER the FEDERAL Government….to unshackel the restraint of the constitution….and it did. After that war they have been throwing of its restraint
So Union did all that for the … slaves?
Propaganda. The issue of slaves didn't come into play till escaped slaves from the south ended up at a Northern camp and opened up shop utilizing their skills as blacksmiths saddlery. Cooks and seamstress and whatever. The camp commander contacted linclon and asked what he should do about it. . The answer was returned was to utilize them in their fields of expertise. The southern soldier answer was correct. For my rights. The northern was gaslighting the audience. " to free the slaves".
Good chance this man didn’t have a slave. About a quarter of the Southern population had slaves. Which I know is still high.
But the odds were that most of the “Jonny Rebs” didn’t own a slave and had no intention of ever getting one.
Regardless of the context of the conversation the amount of respect between these 2 men is admirable
No one was fighting to free the slaves. Nice whitewashing of American history
Could’ve very easily won this entire argument and ended it with “which rights?”
What the Union did was still land and lifestyles of people
The union didn't even free the slaves till halfway thru the war and once they did alot of soldiers left because that's not why they enlisted
“Come on guys just let us own human beings as property. Meh rights.
Respect 🫡 🇺🇸
“To free the slaves, of course.” That is something none of the Union soldiers were fighting for according to the actual documentation of the time to include their personal letters. The Union went to war and invaded the south because “divided we fall” (as Lincoln said). The war was to punish those who tried to leave the Union and start their own Union of states. And slavery was one of the major reasons cited by most of those that seceded from the Union. There was just still too much support for slavery in southern states and the states that remained in the Union. This is why Proclamation 95 aka The Emancipation Proclamation ONLY observed the freedom of those who were slaves in states that were hostile to the Union and those slaves have made their way into Union controlled areas. It did not grant freedom to those in the Union who were slaves or in the territories that were neutral in the war. Yes, states were admitted as free and slave states, but very few of those states admitted to the Union as a free state had legally abolished slavery by the time they were admitted. It was not until 1825 that “most” of those admitted free states made laws to gradually get rid of slavery by granting freedoms to the children of slaves only after those children reached a certain age depending upon the state. Some states granted those freedoms upon the age of 21 and others 25 or 28. And yes, there was still a population of slaves in some of those states in 1860 census!
Would that all 'civil wars' could actually be that "civil."
“To free the slaves” said no union soldier in reality
Some things never change.
Some folks are still fighting for "rats".
Secession isn't rebellion per the U.S Constitution.
Levying war and invasion on your fellow States is…
Lincoln was clear in his First inaugural address that the Invasion was about suppressing Secession and not to interfere with the Institution of slavery. When and why did the yanks up and change the narrative???
Fightin for ma raats
“My rights to deny other people their rights!”
We're fight'n for our rats.
No ,the Union wasn't about ending slavery lol. Many Union officers had slaves and many were against abolishing it… As many confederates didn't even had slaves, they were fighting for their State to nake the decisions
Firstly I wanna say in no way am i defending slavery but… The history of the Civil war is horribly taught in schools and 99% of the country believe the lie. The civil war was not fought on behalf of the slaves, in fact freeing the slaves was not even a thing until three years into the war. It was used as a tactic to garner support for the northern war effort. The war was brought about to preserve the Union, the South succeeded from the union due to what they considered unfair and unjust representation within the northern capital after the election of Abraham Lincoln. And similarly as we see in today’s politics the rich are the only ones with any real say, thus the south succeeded. The vast majority of people who fought in the south did not nor ever owned slaves, and unlike popular Hollywood lies the confederates were not all fighting to keep their slaves. Many fought because simply put they were being invaded by the north and out of loyalty to their homeland. The north used horrible tactics against civilians for example General Sherman’s tactic of “Total War” This is one of many of the tactics used to subdue the south. I could talk about a lot more but this comment is long enough already. Bottom line is ultimately it was right to preserve the union, slavery was a later positive byproduct of the war and the south was no where near the level of malicious that Hollywood and our school systems teach many were just simple people who were fighting for what they deemed as a tyrannical government where they felt they had no say in the decisions of what politicians hundreds of miles away were forcing on them. If we are not careful we can forget the real reasons war begin the way our political climates are now days are not to different from how they were back in the 1800s. We need to learn our history correctly so that we do not repeat it.
He sat out the rest of the war in a prison camp where there was rampant starvation and disintary
At the height of slavery, 78% of slave owners were jews.
But everybody seem to forget that the south was fighting for the right of self rule. The states joined the union by choice and anything you voluntarily join you should able to voluntarily quit. Unless you’re a slave, or in a gang.
Bad acting and ridiculous hair and mustaches…
F*** slavery
The beards are, well, something else
For their rights. States rights. That’s why it was called the confederacy. Because the entirety of the south believed in the right to assimilate freely amongst other like minded over race, religion, jobs, hobbies, farming, property, food etc. the south didn’t want the war. The proposed many times and offered solutions to avoid the war to let them live peacefully. The question that needs to be asked is, “what made the conditions of life so horrible for southern people to want to separate from the United States. Nobody woke up one day and unanimously said death to America. What forced the south into feeling like an armed defense was their only option? Maybe…maybe it was the taxation on the southern ports and the unfair distribution of wealth back to the southern states….. but sure. Let’s assume that every single person fought because they either loved blacks or hated blacks. …which argument seems more logical?
South isn't this a contradiction I am a conservative but I am also a proud southerner and a Johnny Reb
"Your rights to what?"
Out rats
It’s funny to see the unintelligent people talk about slavery as if Americans were the ones going and putting them on boats. You do know America was actually the best to their slaves. We were the smallest importer compared to European and South American countries and provided the best living condition. Average life span of a slave in Spouth America was 5 months, in Europe 2 years, in America 20-25 years
