UPDATE:
On Dec. 11th, it was confirmed that Ryan had returned to the United States on his own. He was subsequently charged with obstructing an officer and arrested. The Sheriff’s Dept is also pursuing restitution for the expenses of the search.
He pleaded not guilty and told the judge, “I can't pay; I don't have money. So I'll defend myself…I have $20 in my wallet in the other room. So that's what I have." Still, Ryan made bond and is no longer incarcerated; meaning that he is free to go until Jan 13th., his next court date.
On Dec.12th, Emily Borgwardt filed a petition seeking a legal separation from Ryan Borgwardt citing that their marriage is “irretrievably broken.” She is pursuing full custody of their three high school aged children. On the documents, Ryan had no listed attorney, was ‘self-employed,’ and was living at an ‘unknown address.’

My father was working with missing person cases, it's not that unusual that somebody goes missing, is pronounced dead only to be found like ten on twenty years later by some accident.
It's really not that hard to disappear, it's just not worth it usually. It really depends on who you want to escape.
If it's religious cult, just deleting social media and moving to different city without telling anybody should do.
Of it's law enforcement… Well. Technically you can just go to "vacation" in different country and "disappear" on the track in forest. The communications in international criminal investigations in lot of country's making problems.
And if you're not using your documents or card, it's just the case of pure good or bad luck if they would find you or not.
