Lonely Outpost – Bawdsey Marsh – Suffolk

History is everywhere in Suffolk.

I thought long and hard before uploading this video, with the events in Ukraine still unfolding I wasn’t sure whether the subject matter would be appropriate.

I am certain most people will view the defences in the same way I do, they are historic monuments to darker days.

in so many ways they are no different to the Napoleonic, Martello towers which have featured on this channel before. Constructed when Britain faced invasion from the near continent, stoutly resilient but ultimately (and thankfully) never required.

I certainly am no advocate of war, what right minded person would be? So if I have offended anyone then I apologise, it was not my intention.

As I have a fair number of non English speaking viewers I have included the text from the video in order for it to be translated (I was amazed at the request).

Along the Suffolk coastline,
a number of WWII coastal anti-invasion defences
remain more or less intact.

82 years since they were constructed, they
are a silent tribute
to the courage and tenacity of the British people
who, although alone, stood up to tyranny in
defence of the free world.

The defences themselves numbered around 28,00 at the end of WW2, of which around 6000 remain. Suffolk like most vulnerable coastal counties has its fair share, still watchfully looking out to sea across bleak marshland.

The kind featured here is, I believed a Type 22 ‘pillbox’ (I sure I will be corrected!) and must have been a lonely and isolated posting for those manning the defences. The massive concrete blocks are anti-tank obstacles and like the pillboxes are still in amazingly good condition considering they have had 80 odd years of wind and rain .

A real testimony to the workers who made them.

I hope to produce a similar video soon, with both Martello towers and WW2 fortifications to highlight my previous point. I just need to get out film then edit it!

So, I hope you enjoy the video.
Until next time and as always.
Cheers!

  1. I for one am glad you uploaded it. It's respectfully done, and superbly edited. If anything, hopefully it might encourage people to pause and spare a thought for those incredible people of Ukraine. Loved it

  2. Knowing that young men on both sides lost their lives, just following orders, we really have not moved on, in respect of wanting to kill each other. Your images of the sad little eyes on the concrete bunker, where soldiers would have sat inside, rifles at the ready, waiting for the invasion. This little island has had a lot of threats, but we survived. The drones images made me feel sad, about war, but very proud to be British. The music and voice of Churchill were spot on.
