  1. Re: favourite planes. I grew up in 1970's Britain, when the war was still fairly in the national psyche. And in the days before the internet and computer games, so you got by on comics. Many were war ones. As a result, my brother and I had heated arguments about whether the Spitfire of the Hurricane was better. I was for the former. Nobody ever talked about the Mosquito in these stories, or in those days. I am glad I got to discover it.

A movie worth a mention: sink the Bismarck. That moment when the admiralty room falls silent as they realise what has happened and that the ship is now a sitting duck. And the second in command whispers 'perhaps we've a chance now sir.' That blows me away.

Tv wise: Band of Brothers was heavily advertised when it came out. The pacific wasn't. I think that's why the former seems better remembered. But that scene in the Pacific part ten, when Lena meets her mother in law…I'm not crying, you're crying!
A few British shows that I grew up on have to be mentioned. Colditz. Classic sunday night tv. Secret Army. Classic escape line drama. And best world war two doc ever: the world at war. Which also has one of the greatest theme tunes ever.

  2. That amusement park sounds uber cool! I might come for the chook! (Only problem with Oktoberfest is there are too many Aussies – being an Aussie myself this is a problem because I don’t travel 16,000 km just to see Australians!).

  3. Screw your services if you’re a traitor who says “democracy is a weak system of govt, and by collaborating we are preserving the place of France in the largest empires of the world.”

  4. P is for Perry (Matthew Calbraith Perry) – led the naval attack on Japan in 1853/1854. Effectively starting the Pacific war.
Or if that’s not enough, perhaps Lord Palmerston who started the Opium Wars… leading to several million opium addicts in China.
    5-star General D’s those two.

  5. It's my birthday (a big'un) soon and more than anything I wish I could join you in France for the intimate dinner. However I am between things and also need to renew my papers so sadly it won't happen.

  6. What a joke. Indira Gandhi is the only Indian PM who officially suspended constitutional rights. She did this during the Emergency to rein in political opponents. If she can be invited to the Alpbach forum to discuss the future of democracy, who cant.

  7. The HMS Warspite, it may be argued, had a more illustrious history than either the U.S.S. Enterprise or the German Merchant Raider "Cormoran." Warspite fought in both World Wars I (incl. the Battle of Jutland) and II in the Battles of Narvik, Calabria, Taranto, Cape Matapan, Sicily, and the amphibious invasions of Italy and Normandy (shore bombardment), among other actions. Warspite was one of a handful of capital ships that served throughout both WWI & WWII.

  8. It would be a great idea if, in addition to (or within the context of) what you've briefly discussed regarding future plans, you are also actively considering the idea of doing a follow-up series on THE COLD WAR.
