A simple game once played in basements has grown into a global phenomenon known as Dungeons and Dragons. The new 5th Edition of D&D (known as ‘5E’) has gained a broad audience because of shows like Stranger Things and Big Bang Theory and podcasts and web series like Critical Role and Acquisitions Incorporated people play D&D online.
Fantasy is at the heart of D&D. You and your friends use this system to tell stories together, and any story you want can be told.
The reason for this is that these stories and every D&D story take place in the players’ minds – and, to an outsider, it all just seems strange.
As you progress through the game, you’ll encounter monsters, bandits, and bad guys, and sometimes talking won’t fix it. Fighting them is the only option. Fighters will plunge forward with sword and shield, Wizards will hurl magic spells from a distance, and Clerics will be on hand to keep you all alive and healed. D&D combat takes place in turns, so everyone has the chance to move, led by the Dungeon Master who runs the session.
Each D&D game takes place in a different world. Your DM may have created their D&D world, or you may be playing in one of the ‘official’ worlds. There are plenty of places for you to explore, from sunken ships to haunted castles to deserted villages to monster-ridden mountaintops.
As a D&D player, you take on the role of a fantasy character. During roleplay, you interact with other characters. Don’t be intimidated if this sounds difficult. There are many ways to roleplay! Using a different accent or voice can help you to sound like the character. Or, you can describe what your character does: “Ulfgar orders drinks for the party from the barmaid.”
For those confused about what I’m talking about when I’m referring to D&D, here is an excerpt from Wikipedia detailing what Dnd is about:
Dungeons & Dragons was derived from miniature wargames, with the 1971 game Chainmail serving as the initial rule system. D&D’s publication is commonly recognized as the beginning of modern role-playing games and the role-playing game industry.
D&D departs from traditional wargaming by allowing each player to create their own character to play instead of a military formation. These characters embark upon imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. A Dungeon Master (DM) serves as the game’s referee and storyteller while maintaining the setting in which the adventures occur and playing the role of the game world’s inhabitants. The characters form a party, interacting with the setting’s inhabitants and each other. Together they solve dilemmas, engage in battles, explore, and gather treasure and knowledge. In the process, the characters earn experience points (XP) to rise in levels and become increasingly powerful over a series of separate gaming sessions.
In 2004, D&D remained the best-known and best-selling role-playing game in the US, with an estimated 20 million people have played the game and more than US$1 billion in book and equipment sales worldwide.
