  1. This game is NOT a 10/10. It's very good. But it has its flaws… like every game does. That said I would rate it a solid 8.8/10.
    Btw, I've never given a game a 10/10.

  2. Could be because many games are being released not finished or because many developers have shady business practices that it gets good reviews. We are just happy to get a good playable game at launch lol

  3. But wouldn’t this all be the case already by Bloodborne? And that game didn’t get a 97. Personally I love this game, but the reviews seem way too high. The obtuseness is a bit much when even basic skills/abilities can be compleeeetely missed.

  4. I’m playing it on my PS4 pro and I’ve had zero problems with it. I love it, and the only problem I have with it is the same one I always have with From games, the camera.

  5. The best way to decide the value of any product is not to compare it with your own personal resources, that's dumb, that leads people to waste resources. That mistake may seem irrelevant with a 60 dollar game but if you make that mistake with a 60 dollar game, you'll probably do the same with a 300.000 dollars house.

The right way to get the value of a product is to compare it with other similar products. Simple as that. A new fighting game with 12 characters, story mode and a good online multiplayer is 25 bucks. What's the release price for other fighting games with similar number of characters, story mode and good netcode?

That's the right way to do it not just with videogames, but with anything. At least to not pay like an idiot.

  6. I put off death stranding and pokemon shield because of negative reviews….
I LOVED those games when i got round to them & wished i played them sooner & ignored the reviews.

I also love dark souls 2 and bloodborne over every other souls game. Commonly DS2 is considered one of the worst and bloodborne one of the best but i see them both as equals. So when people say elden ring is a 10/10 i have no idea what that actually means to me.

  7. It’s the same with how every gaming outlet has “the fighting game” player because asking someone to just pickup a fighting game with no knowledge of how they work is probably majorly different from the people interested to buy a fighting game

  8. It's the Zelda and Mario effect

For me ER is a fantastic 9/10 but it's absolutely not for everyone, in fact, it's probably not a game for most people so how can it be 10/10s across the board

Souls fans should absolutely give it a 10 but the lack of non souls fans reviewers is apparent

  9. This is a really intresting topic. If you, as a dev, manage to make consumers expect your game to be in a way and it is, then you can get away with many flaws. For an example games from From Software are expected to have their story told by item descriptions, environment and npcs and that is often very hard to understand without youtube explanation videos. If other game do something like that it'd be trashed in reviews…

  10. I'm sadly old enough to remember and cherish the days where gaming mags like EGM use to conduct gaming reviews with 4 editors. It was so effective. There was always that one reviewer who I just knew I could depend on as I could always relate to his/her point of view. Because of that I was never disappointed with my gaming purchases. I understand in today's blazing fast age, such a review standard would not make sense. But man, I really miss those days.

I do think Elden Ring is an amazing Game and definitely my pick as a GOTY contender already. I think it deserves all of the praise it's been receiving.

  11. The point you made about players playing Sekiro and not the dark souls games is very true. I think I played maybe a total of 10 hours of ds2 but I finished all of Sekiro. Easily one of the hardest games I’ve every played. I’m enjoying elden ring, sure it’s hard, but the feeling you get when beating a boss that you’ve worked so hard to beat is amazing. I don’t see why the games being bombarded with negative reviews, especially the ones who just complain it’s hard.

  12. While true, I do think that regardless of a game's faults if a reviewer honestly feels a game is one of the greatest ever then a 10/10 is not only deserved but required. What else do we use 10/10s for if not that? Perfect games? There are no perfect games.

  13. Somebody mentioned review scores being used as a recommendation score rather than a measurement of quality. As somebody that doesn't like review scores and often doesn't agree with the popular consensus on games, this really helped me see past it.

  14. Came here looking for an explanation for this weird groupthink behaviour and it still doesn't make much sense to me. Even hardcore fans should be able to temper their views with at least a hint of objectivity and virtually no one has done that. It's doubly strange that a lot of the reviews mention some of the games flaws, but then proceed to give it a flawless score anyway.
