Let's Read Fate/Strange Fake – Volume 1 [Character Creation + Chapter 1]

Been a minute since we have read a light novel, but let’s start with the one people said I had to read EVEN DAY 1 STARTING F/SN. It’s time for Strange Fake!

I’m going to be real the ordering of the chapters is so weird I have no idea if this makes sense that in part 5 we are reading Chapter 1. I made a mistake putting them in the title. Oh well, gotta commit.

  1. 8:03 Well you needed to have basically read everything in the Nasuverse that’s exist at the times of the books’ writing, since there are references, big or small, to at least 90% of the other canonical Nasuverse works.

  2. Yes, that old man is indeed Zelretch, and that labyrinth mentioned is the same one as the one in that spin-off. I haven't read it either, but as far as I know it's not required to understand anything here. The one on the phone, its creator, is Zelretch's best friend, fellow dead apostle ancestor Caubac Alcatraz, famous for making that labyrinth and then getting trapped in it himself, that's why he speaks through a phone.
The plot is finally starting…sort of. This is still just the beggining, Narita doesn't know when to stop, but that's why he's great.

  3. Fate Labyrinth is …unrelated, Starlit Marmelade… is closer but nah
Simple story is Man in Chair is Zel, like you assumed, Mr Telephone is Dead Apostle Ancestor nr 27, Caubac Alcatraz
The Author, REALLY like references, so if you go down the road of "maybe i should`ve read that referenced thing first" you`ll never get to Strange Fake

  4. The videogame (MMO) was more supposed to be Fate/Apocrypha, F/SF existed in a bit different but same way in the Type-Moon Ace vol. 2, 2008 April Fools LN version "Fake/states night" (like it could be a Prologue to a game as a joke), but here Narita is just naming a Chapter in context this way.

  5. "Uh…Gil. I think I'm in trouble. My only weakness is here"
"Yea sure. Wait, you serious? What are you talking about? You have no weakness, your only weakness is …….death….itself… Well fuck. See you later then"

  6. The fact that you already read more then half of what is required for reading F/SF is already impressive, considering Narita put Everything canonical from Nasuverse here (and still do, since he is literally on the phone line with Nasu, Sanda and etc, just like Caubac Alcatraz with Zelretch here), so don't worry for now, its more so fun things that you will be revisiting and remembering later down the line.
But it is good to know that Caubac (DAA, maker of that Labyrinth he trapped in and "certain Holy Scripture") is one of Zel's best friends with whom he thrown tea parties back in the day.

  7. Just so you've don't forget, if you find yourself confused about Zelretch, if you want, you can always search his fresh Material profile that Nasu did, its quite extensive, considering we didn't have much before anyway (there is few lore spoiler-ish things maybe? but its really no big deal). Tho best to keep in mind that F/SF world is also its own thing.

  8. Boo get out of here A girl I want fresh protagonists who isn’t associated with another universe’s set of servants.

    Also Spoiler Idea
This is just me but, I’m betting one jacks forms must be James Moriarty both being set around same time with James dying 3 years after Jack surfaced and what kind of Writer (not including Narita specifically) wouldn’t want to play with that idea.

Really Gilgamesh being more human than most human, feels a bit odd when Enkidu originally stopped him from sleeping with other men wife in the EoG, a beast having more empathy than this most human human.

  9. 0:15 Here we go again. "Fate/strange fake" wasn't planned or intended to be a game. Narita just wrote the 2008 April Fools story "Fake/states night" as if it were a prologue to a game, and posted in his website. To my knowledge, there weren't any actual plans to make anything of it. In 2009, it was included with Type-Moon Ace vol. 2, retitled as "Fate/strange fake". I previously assumed that the 2009 version was identical to the 2008 one, but since then I found claims and evidence to the contrary. Unfortunately, I didn't find the 2008 text itself so I can't say what exactly was and wasn't in it.

I'm not actually sure if Narita meant "game" as in a visual novel, or something more action-y. But the idea he outlined was that player would have to make narrative decisions affecting who you meet, who you ally with, who you betray, who you kill, who you save.

And then 2015 light novel happened, which you are reading.

By the way, I forgot to mention this in the previous part, but that sentence that identified Tsubaki's Servant as Pestilence was a bit of creative liberty taken by the translator of the 2009 version. The actual text didn't identify the Servant. Now, it is understandable why the translator concluded that the Servant is Pestilence (aka Rider of the White Horse, or just White Rider). What I don't understand is why they thought they should add that conclusion in the translation. 47:07 Here we are given the actual name of the Servant, Pale Rider (aka Death, the only one of the Four Horsemen that is actually given a name in the Book of Revelation).

  10. I can't believe they call Pestilence the Pale Rider when he's actually the White Rider smh. Death is the one who's the Pale Rider. Maybe it's a mistranslation, since you could easily describe a white thing as pale, but fan translators tend to be particularly good at researching names.

  11. Congratulations, Tanner, what you've actually just witnessed is Zelretch & the 2nd Magic / Kaleidoscope at work.
That one on the phone is Caubac Alcatraz, the 27th Dead Apostle Ancestor, also known as the Comedian among the 27 (IIRC, you've actually come across the name once during your Kagetsu Tohya playthrough in one of the info blurbs). He is a close friend of Zelretch, & is said to be just a step away from the level of True Magic. He, along with Zelretch, witnessed Arcueid's birth 800yrs ago, leaving a lasting impression on the young True Ancestor. He has trapped himself in a labyrinth of his own making (hence, the "Alcatraz" in his name), & only interacts with the outside thru the use of phones since he thinks that the outside world is boring. He seems to have been fleshed out more in Tsukihime Remake compared to his OG Tsukihime counterpart (though I haven't read the Remake myself).

  12. I've actually read up on some of the Servants in strange fake before & I knew about the Pale Rider so it confused me why the translation used Pestilence instead since they're 2 different Horsemen of the Apocalypse (the White Rider is said to be Pestilence in some interpretations, while the Pale Rider has always been Death). Turns out, it was just the translator taking some liberties with the translation, meaning Rider was never named Pestilence by Narita as far as I'm aware. The Rider here is indeed the Pale Rider / Death.
