Let's Play Hugo Black Diamond Fever (GBC) #01: Hugo to the Rescue! [Strobe Warning]

This video contains scenes that may not be suitable for people who suffer from epilepsy. Please keep this in mind if you intend to watch the video.

It turns out there are quite a few Hugo games on the Game Boy and this is one I’d missed up until recently. This is understandable considering that it came out in 2003, the same year that the handheld was discontinued. This unfortunate timing prevented many that might have enjoyed it from experiencing what is a pretty straightforward but solid platformer.

The beginning levels are simple in layout, light on opponents and give you plenty of time to complete them. All of these will change as the game progresses, but that’s pretty standard. What’s not standard is the music that is pretty catchy in the later worlds.

  1. Welcome to Crazy Cast-uh… I mean hugo and the black diamonds!

Wait if we're collecting all the gems does that mean we're doing it… for the ritual? I mean we are kind of bringing them right to her.

  2. For someone who sorta grew up with the games where you try to climb a mountain, fly a plane, ride a mine cart and so on, this looks a bit odd. Not in a bad way, mind. Sort of reminds me of the Crazy Castle games, except that here you can directly attack enemies. Also, fewer doors.
