It turns out there are quite a few Hugo games on the Game Boy and this is one I’d missed up until recently. This is understandable considering that it came out in 2003, the same year that the handheld was discontinued. This unfortunate timing prevented many that might have enjoyed it from experiencing what is a pretty straightforward but solid platformer.
The beginning levels are simple in layout, light on opponents and give you plenty of time to complete them. All of these will change as the game progresses, but that’s pretty standard. What’s not standard is the music that is pretty catchy in the later worlds.

I don't think you need a recipe to become more cruel when you've already enslaved an entire island of people.
Being from the Evil Dimension™, I remember this game very differently. In the Evil Dimension™, you help Hugo steal the Black Diamonds to help Scula achieve her wicked goals.
"And so, Sculla learned that the true cruelty was the atrocities she committed along the way."
Funny game blast from the oast
But, didn't she say, she only needed one diamond? So why make everyone mine more for her. That seems… Inefficient
Loving this play through!
Damn, i remember the old hugo tvgameshow and wanting to try it as a kid, but not being allowed to haha
Welcome to Crazy Cast-uh… I mean hugo and the black diamonds!
Wait if we're collecting all the gems does that mean we're doing it… for the ritual? I mean we are kind of bringing them right to her.
Watch out! This is bat country!
I don't think I've seen a villain with the specific goal to become more cruel before; usually that's just a side-effect.
sparklies for everyone!🙂
Do you know what meaner than just being mean? Being mean AND kidnapping creatures to work in a diamond mine.
I think 10 black diamonds gets a password? Maybe?
Really Kiko a short LP?
Huh, I wonder if the enemies stand back up eventually if you don't run over the unconscious form. Ah… confirmed.
This isn't the Hugo I know. The Hugo I knew was from the "House of Horror" series.
Ahh the games I never saw anywhere apart from on those weird call-in shows where you played them via pressing buttons on your landline phone.
Oh, I remember Hugo. I don't think I've played this game, though.
For someone who sorta grew up with the games where you try to climb a mountain, fly a plane, ride a mine cart and so on, this looks a bit odd. Not in a bad way, mind. Sort of reminds me of the Crazy Castle games, except that here you can directly attack enemies. Also, fewer doors.
