Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is a 2020 platform game developed by Toys for Bob and published by Activision. It was originally released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with releases for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows following in 2021. The eighth main installment in the Crash Bandicoot series, the game’s story follows Crash Bandicoot and his sister Coco as they recover the all-powerful Quantum Masks in a bid to prevent Doctor Neo Cortex and Doctor Nefarious Tropy from taking over the multiverse. They are indirectly aided by their former enemy Dingodile and an adventuring alternate-dimension counterpart of Crash’s old girlfriend Tawna. The game retains the series’ core platforming gameplay, and adds new elements through the use of the Quantum Masks, who can alter levels and provide means to traverse or overcome obstacles. It also includes additional game modes for replaying levels, and the ability to control five characters, three of whom – Cortex, Dingodile, and Tawna – have their own unique gameplay and levels. The development team intended for the game to be a direct continuation from the original trilogy in both narrative and gameplay, and created the Quantum Masks and additional playable characters after studying the series’ mechanics and determining fresh elements to add to the gameplay. 1. I've mixed feeling about these sort of mid-level challenge missions. I think they're fun but they can also really ruin the pacing if you get stuck on them at all. So, sure skill issue, but then again they are optional challenges. Key word challenge. They are supposed to push players to some degree.

I remember my playthrough of Doom 2016 and having a grand old time but you'd keep hitting these optional challenge runs. I think it's how you got weapon upgrades maybe? I forget why they were "optional" but not really.

It's been eight years. Forgive me if the details are slightly off.

There'd be one in every level so guaranteed once per level you'd stop playing the campaign and have to do this little gauntlet or whatever else over and over again until you got it right. Just super messed me up. I never finished that game because I got to one of these optional challenge and either couldn't beat it, or beat it after so many retries that I got sick of playing the game; the game having stopped being the fun new Doom campaign for an hour and instead becoming FPS Super Meat Boy, and so I "Put it down for a while" and never found the time to come back.

I dunno. The exact same levels, just in a menu somewhere, as a string of challenges to try to beat anytime you wanted would be fine. But if you jam them into the middle of gameplay I'm going to play them as I find them and I just don't think it works well in that way.

Like I don't think the campaign was designed with the intent that players would stop dead in their tracks midlevel for some indeterminate amount of time to do a side mission. It's a game all about forward momentum. But they put one in every level anyways.

That's just one example. I kind of see it with Crash here too. He's going along doing great when he gets stuck on this level within a level for thirty minutes. He was already playing a level. Couldn't these have been their own space on the map you unlock by finding some mcguffin mid level?

Or are there folk out there who love this as a design choice? Let me here ya.

  2. I feel like Canada must have one of the least-diverse national identities in terms of accents. I have relatives that live thousands of kilometers away, and I don’t feel like they speak any differently.

  3. Honestly let the person who didn't struggle with any part of this game throw the first stone. There were so many parts that I did over and over in my quest to perfect this game and I have played Crash all my life

  4. Those bouncing metal crates always gave me anxiety when I had to deal with them. It feels like sometimes they'll kill you even if you're just standing next to them. And this game loves putting them everywhere, especially in late game levels.

  5. Seen the almost always calm and collected Alex lose their shitin an optional level of Crash Bandicoot is some kind of "Greek myth hubris tale" kind of thing. The schadenfreude is just delicious xD

  6. Speaking as a Canadian who lived in England for 2 years, Brits are OBSESSED with regional differences in their accents, and if you tell them you cant tell the difference between their accent and the accent from someone 2 towns over, they will act incredulous.

  7. Fun fact, in the mid to late 1800's there was a large movement in England to make English less French and Latin. So they started adding letters to words like honor and color and started pronouncing silent letters like the H in herb. Most of these changes never crossed over to the US.

  8. It's always interesting to hear Alex casually diminish aspects/attributes of America/Being America in conversations. I don't know it's from a place of modesty or anti-patriotism, but it's just interesting as someone who has no strong opinion on the matter either way.
