Hearing this live is such an amazing experience 😊
I first heard this on the radio several weeks ago. Definitely my favorite Vaughan Williams piece ever
I love this piece. But this performance doesn't really gel. Perhaps because the musicians are all siiting so far apart, I dunno.
"Vaun Williams" is how you say it… I think it's the power of the whole violin body. If they all play a melody, that's impressive. Reminds me of having a solo singer, then accompanied by the whole choir. Faure Requiem comes to mind. Eg the singer in "Libera me". Must-react btw. Even if you're not into choir music.
It's pronounced "vawn" to rhyme with "dawn." And he pronounced his first name "Rafe" to rhyme with "safe." His family name is Vaughan Williams, so he's filed under "V," not "W." . Most people get his name wrong. I know it's odd, but he was an odd dude. Lived to be 85, and then died suddenly. After a long life of composing, he continued to be an innovator, and his last symphonies are rather strange. He said that he regretted getting old because he was "just getting the hang of it."
If you're feeling a "movie" quality, it's because this piece was used extensively in "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World." Vaughan Williams loved movies, and he was a pioneer of film music. One of his symphonies is just a film soundtrack fixed up a bit to give it symphonic structure. Most people get strong visual images when they listen to his music.
Could be a bit of a change from your usual content but you should check out the John Wilson orchestra (the conductor in this video) playing the scores from Hollywood 40s and 50s musicals. Genuine magic. A good place to start is his version of Tom and Jerry
Finally! I've been waiting for you to discover this piece since you listened to The Lark Ascending (so quite some time) 🙂 I knew you would love it because, is not only special to you. This has some kind of magic that has touched a lot of people. I'm one of those who discovered it through the movie Master and Commander over 20 years ago and those two masterpieces together absolutely blew my mind 🙂
Gotta pay tribute to the original. I’ve read that this fantasia was based on the third of nine choral works by tallis for the archbishop’s psalter. I forgot which psalm it was though (something about heathens?)
Thinking about Tallis (even tho he’s renaissance), he reminded me of la Follia. You should check out the one by Geminiani and Vivaldi, respectively.
Also, interesting ensemble layout for this recording.
Luscious sound. Luscious piece. The acoustic of this space is wonderful on this recording. Luscious reaction.
Cziffra Paraphrase on Il Trovatore – no words for this 1 flashy and lovely.
It’s a very swoonable piece, lots of soaring up and swooping down…
