Left Backs are Broken
In today’s video we explore a theory that I have had for a while in FM22 and that is that the left back position is overpowered and ridiculously effective when you do one simple trick – give them all of the set pieces. Today I explain my theory and then test it out with a series of simulations, collecting data and aim to prove that left backs specifically are ridiculously effective in this year’s Football Manager 2022 Match Engine.

Funny you should mention this. I have a fairly defensive left-back and his performances have been awful… Perhaps I need to replace with a more attacking full back.
I honestly had some doubts about this… but I really think your onto something here. The first game where I tried this out my LB (who was averaging a 6.74 before this mind you) put in the best perfomance of the season with a 9.4, 11 key passes and 3 assists in a 5-1 win.
How many assists did each of the other players get in each season? More tables are needed.
Is it more on the set piece taker being a defender so more attackers can get on the assists? That would be my guess as to why. Maybe if you ever do a follow up, try with more RB’s & CB’s (of differing strong feet.) Interesting experiment and theory tho Clayts, lovely vid too!
I don't feel that wingers/if perform too well in the game this year which makes the the job for lb and rb a little easier and tends to inflate their ratings off the back of it, this could also have an impact on better set piece delivery if they are deemed to performing better in games they are more likely to produce better deliveries than a winger or cam on a lower rating, interesting theory though but i think the player rating through the match might be a big factor
100% Federico DiMarco and Sergio Gomez absolute 🐐's I've found, always sign DiMarco
Left backs are broken you're right
In my latest save, my RB is actually out performing the LB, but both have been fantastic and for me, they are both really good crossers, which linked with getting forward seems to really help the ratings…the only one beating them in ratings is the Tallest striker who's getting on the end of the most crosses and banging in the headers
I would say the LB & RB roles did need a tweak, as for the past few years they have had pretty bad ratings regardless of roles and teams
Need to re-run the test with the same left backs, without them being in set pieces to see what the average rating is to compare if it is the set pieces or the LB position
Aaron Lewis, my Right Back at Newport County consistently finished as the highest average rating and most assists in the league for 4 seasons, between league 2 and 1.
Well this makes sense now how my 31 year old luke shaw for notts forrest won the premier league player of the year 🙂
Would be interesting to see how a right footed LB performed, to see if it's the position that caused it
Agree with this completely. Playing a network save as West Ham and had Aaron Cresswell win EPL player of the year twice
Left backs and right backs are absolutely broken I signed di Marco for real sociedad and he won player of the season and had close to 35 goal contributions
Took Curzon Ashton to the premier league and couldn´t afford world beaters, wingbacks are however the bread and butter of any team playing a narrow style if used correctly. I quickly found out that two stats are crucial, crossing of course which isn´t surprising and jumping. They both have decent physicals but nothing to write home about.
I then got a wonderkid who looks phenomenal, I had to transition him to the midfield because he can´t jump and losing a header in his defensive duties is just a disaster waiting to happen as a wingback. He had some excellent games as a wingback but his stinkers were remarkable and they always happened the same way, cross comes into the box, he loses the header and the opponent gets a goal …. he immediately plummets in rating, this can also happen after consecutive lost jump challenges.
Basically the entire defense should be good at jumping, got a 4th place in the first season with Curzon by having two tall rocks in the central defence and two wingbacks who could challenge in the air as well. Wingbacks in FM aren´t like in real life, they don´t stand off if they are small, they will always attempt the challenge in the air.
My team is Az I have gk Trubin, lb cambiaso cbs Lomonarco and papetti, rb cagarela dm rovella cm ricci amlc farias aplm G Biro. Raw Angelo Atst M Leonardo/ Rosintic and the best player is my lb lol I've won x4 league cups, champions of Europe x3 World club Cup x1. Amazing
U might be right. My left backs have always been one of if not my best performing player but i though it was just because of my formation. The formation essentially has no one at the left side except my left backs so i assumed they were getting assists and goals just because they were the only one available on the left side. But tbf, none of my lbs have been above average yet they have consistently been averaging 7.5 every single season
He was my goat in FM21
I usually play with a style that is more attacking on one side and more holding/defending/support on the other side and usually i go with attacking left side. I use a wing back on attack to create width and getting more bodies on the flank (I play either an inverted winger or an inside forward just in front of him, sometimes i leave the flank to the wing back all together if i want more strikers up front). Majority of the games my wing back gets to 7.0 rating and lights up green throughout the match. Funny thing is the player does not even need to be a left back. Most players with good attributes suited for a winger can easily play wing back, especially if you are one of the more dominant sides in your league. I can never get the same consistency from my supporting/defending full back on the right side, since he is not that much involved in the final third. You can look at Man City. Kyle Walker is a great player but him having a good game or not comes down to his defensive skills, tackles, interceptions, running back to trail an attacker etc. On the other side Cancelo's impact comes from crosses, passes, dribblings, one-on-ones etc. Statistically the latter will be involved in more actions that lead up to a positive rating.
Lbs truely are overpowered. I had a fb who i used at marselli called lucas olaze and their was a season where he got 20+ assists in a season. It was mental. He took my corners and long throw taker and got so many assists. He also had a season before where he got 15+ assists.
I would add in a few more "controls" for Newcastle in this experiment, Matt Targett, Jamal Lewis, Dan Burn (a CB by trade but can also play LB, and maybe even do one season for Paul Dummett. I noticed Lewis for example having decent seasons before.
Did you just use default set piece tactics?
Noted, now i'll play with 2 left backs and no rigth back
Clayts said it, so I tried it immediately!!! Jay Dasilva at Bristol City put in a 7.3 without breaking a sweat! Looking forward to seeing what happens!
Should have put Tripper as a LB after the RB test with him wonder if he would have done better
Im currently playing a career with club brugge and my left back is faitout maouassa. in the last 3 seasons he had an average rating of 7.22, 7.41 and 7.84. im currently in my 4th season and his average rating after 18 games is a 8.51. he has 50 assists in 107 games for my club and 21 man of the match awards. he is not even my main set piece taker. he has a current ability of 141. just an insane player and i absolutly love him. even my back up left back with a CA of 137 has an average rating of 7.34 over the past 2 seasons. if i compare that to my right backs they only just hit 7.10 on average. in my experience the left back position is just broken
Of course, a wing back that plays well should be doing more than anybody else on the pitch, WBs should be making runs, through balls, crosses. Makes sense to me that they should get very high ratings so long as they play well in their positions. Compare to a CAM, a lot less tackles and key tackles if they play well and track the man they mark. CB, i've seen CBs get high average rating when they're tall and they go up for every header in the match.
Anyway I think you're right but to add, because its such a versatile role the game is accurate in its representation of WBs average rating. Definitely not a bug 🙂
Would be fascinating to see if a right footed left back has the same impact
I had Calvin Ramsay at RB for Maidstone, average stats and won player of the season twice due to his set pieces and crossing.
If you let a back player take your set piece you have more people up front and thus better chance to score, thus more assists
It also makes you a bit more vulnerable to counter attacks, but if the back isnt there to defend i dont think it counts as negative towards their rating
Also 1 season per player is a bit low, would be better to make the it the average of 10, 1 can be a fluke.
Grimaldo did 18 assist in my first season at Benfica.
had Alex telles in a dortmund save he bagged 20 assists in one season and defended like prime Maldini
I am interested now how the team of only left backs would work 🤔great video, I had the same with Sylla in Toulouse, he was making 15-20 assists per season
Then how come my Left backs are getting 6.5 every single games while the rest of my players are easy 7+? lol
AML is another weird position, they should have good heading and jumping.
Watched this video and Signed Telles for my FC Salzburg team 2nd season – Put him on all set pieces including penalties, RIDICULOUS – PLD 18 GLS 9 ASTS 4 POM 11 AV RAT 8.03 – Unreal
