Return of the Living Dead (1985) is a cult classic horror-comedy that puts a unique spin on the traditional zombie genre. Directed by Dan O’Bannon, the film blends dark humor with gory thrills, creating a memorable and irreverent take on the undead.
The story begins at a medical supply warehouse in Louisville, Kentucky, where two employees, Frank (James Karen) and Freddy (Thom Mathews), accidentally release a mysterious gas called Trioxin 2-4-5 from a military barrel. This toxic gas has a reanimating effect, bringing corpses back to life as ravenous zombies.
After the gas is released, it spreads to a nearby cemetery, where the dead begin to rise from their graves, hungry for brains. As the outbreak intensifies, a group of teens who are hanging out at the cemetery find themselves in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. They team up with Frank, Freddy, and a mortician named Ernie (Don Calfa) to try to survive the growing horde of the undead.
The zombies in Return of the Living Dead are notably different from traditional zombies. They can run, talk, and are specifically driven by their insatiable desire for human brains, which they claim helps relieve the pain of being dead. The film introduces the iconic zombie line, “Braaiiins!” which has since become synonymous with the genre.
As the group battles the undead, they find that the traditional methods of killing zombies—such as shooting them in the head or burning them—are ineffective, making survival increasingly difficult. The movie builds up to a chaotic and darkly humorous climax, offering a blend of horror, satire, and memorable characters.
The film is known for its fast-paced plot, punk rock aesthetic, and satirical commentary on the zombie genre, making it a significant and influential entry in the realm of horror-comedy.

8:37…….Yep! Believe it or not, April, the film makers had to get permission from the Lysol company in order to use their product on screen! So you are right! Sponsored by Lysol!! 😂😂
9:30…….I think it says "Burt is a slave driver and a cheap son of a bitch", April! 😂
Best Zombie Movie Ever.
15:30…….You are so very adorable, April!!!! ✌️❤️
17:00……The Tar Man zombie is one of the greatest practical effects in film history!! 👏👏👏👏👍 It was a man in a costume, and very well done!! 👍
There's 5 of these movies alltogether…2 and 3 are worth a watch but the last 2 are awful!
Naked woman's name is alata, alata vagina!
omg yes! yesss!!!! thank you!!!! I was hoping one day you'd have a chance to react to this. Fun fact, the extras who played zombies were paid extra money if they ate actual cow brains for the scenes. Also, the actors who play Freddy and the guy who showed him the zombie in the tank, they are seen again in the sequel return of the living dead part 2 and the actor who was Freddy makes a Easter egg joke that he feels like they've been through this before. ALSO this was the movie that had my first horror crush. I don't know why but I love the bad boys, and I was crushing hard on the character Suicide.
You might like ROTLD2… all the fun and no boobs…
one last thing I forgot to mention, the character Trash, she reappears in a video game. I cant remember which one but it's a shooting game or something and the level is Las Vegas somewhere in a oil or toxic waste section in Vegas you go underground and find Trash's body laying on the bed with a diary explaining some creepy stuff she's into (wont say what) but because of this she wants to be a zombie so she's been experimenting with some stuff, and I guess in the end it kills the game version of trash. they refer to that section of the game as an Easter egg/ nod to return of the living dead. Again though I cant remember the name of the video game.
one last thing I must ask…if you were volunteering at this place, and this guy told you that Night of the living dead was a true story then tells you the tale about the actual bodies and they were down in the basement, what would you do?
A: definately go down with this guy and go see them
B: this volunteer job isn't what I expected, I'm leaving
C.: not only leave, but report the company's negligence for not reporting missing military property.
Bert and Ernie kind of are Bert and Ernie.
The thing about the heart is made up. The hardest part to cremate are teeth. They are actually the hardest part of the human body.
time code: 12:25 – frank is an ex-nazi. check out the poster in the poster on the wall, in the frame.
– this is why ernie has a WWII gun.
– burt hired ernie, for cheap pay, to work the morgue, given his past.
– this is the "favor" ernie owes burt.
F YES! My fav zombie film of all time! Second favorite is "Train to Busan".
Let's get some light over here, trash is taking her clothes off again
I’m so glad that you reacted to this. I thought this movie was hilarious
14:10 It was actually Casey who saw Freddy go into the embalming room, not Tina.
"it sucked all the education out of my head!" 😂😅🤣 your end comments are easily the best part! 😁 thank you for another FUN reaction! 👍☺
Your 'Trash' imitation was kinda hot.
"JUST BURY ME IN THE YARD" 😂
jank movie ??? girl this was a comical horror masterpiece. this is the movie that started the whole "zombie's eat brains" thing.
This is camp. If you don't get it, you don't get it. It's all good.
Hey Sis, if it makes you feel better that vajay-jay was a prostetic!
George Romero, and John Russo mainly wrote the script for ‘Night of the Living Dead’, but they had a pretty big falling out about the film. They both eventually signed a contract that stated George Romero could no longer use the word “Living” in the titles of his movies, which is why his next movies were ‘Dawn OF THE DEAD’ and ‘Day OF THE DEAD’. John Russo, however, could use “Living” for his projects, so he wrote a book in the late 70’s called ‘Return of the Living Dead’, which is what this film was supposed to be based on, but the director changed the whole story to what this movie is. John Russo is also responsible for “remaking” the original ‘Night of the Living Dead’ in the late 90’s, and called it ‘Night of the Living Dead: 30th Anniversary Edition’, which added some things to “flesh out” the story.
i hope to one day commit to anything as hard as James Karen commits to his performance as Frank did in this film lol
This is one of my favorite movies, and one of my favorite soundtracks. The Surfin' Dead, Burn the Flames, Take a Walk, Party Time, they're all GREAT! Fun reaction, you're a hoot. 🤘
