Podcast 36 – Horse Racing Revival and Unchecked Injustice

Larry Rolla and Marshall Dobson’s shared frustrations with regulators, judges, and bad actors in the horse racing sport/industry in both the USA and Australia highlight the striking parallels and challenges faced on either side of the globe. Despite geographical differences, the systemic issues and characters within the industry seem to transcend borders.

The is a common thread of disillusionment with the regulatory bodies and the influence of money and connections. Whether in the USA or Australia, the speakers suggest that success or failure in the horse racing world may sometimes depend more on personal connections and financial clout than on merit.

The Against All Odds podcast is a true story of one man’s ride through the tainted world of horse racing – a world riddled with greed, corruption, celebrities, drugs, sex and the Mob.

Larry Rolla was a talented, respected trainer who invented new ways to fix aging and injured racehorses. Despite his success, his demons and his association with the Mob both helped and destroyed his life. He was involved with every phase of Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing, seen it all and done it all, learned how to duck and dive and live through it all. He is a unique man whose past most would not survive. More importantly, he was an extremely compassionate guy who took people with damaged lives and helped them as well, if he could. He liked fixing things that needed fixing.

  2. Definitely think out of the box…! Not the same ole same ole.. I commend you for your suggestion. However you got a guy running around with PETA a ( whistleblower)that wants to crush the industry. PETA killed a lot animals during Hurricane Harvey. They are not innocent. Did you present this to Gural?

  3. Hiya Larry…My Father called it in the mid 1970s at the NYRA. He saw Madison Ave types and corporate weenies getting WAY TOO much power. The true horse 🐎 men were being ignored…Morons…Matt Mad Dog πŸ• Sweeney

  4. Youll like this Larry…My father was Paddock & Patrol judge at Belmont mid 1970s to 1981 (RIP). It was 1978 and the Greatest Horse Race of all time was about to happen. Affirmed vs Alydar for the Triple Crown πŸ‘‘. The Paddock was PACKED like Sardines with anybody who was somebody Plus obnoxious paparazzi .
This asshole Cameraman from ABC TRIED to nudge my father (The Paddock and Patrol Judge!!) hard to get a better picture.
My father Bart III was a total gentleman, but grew up tough on Rockaway Blvd in South Ozone Park. Him and his older brother Crazy Pat, were local Bar and street brawlers AND both All City Football stars at John Adams HS late 1950s. My father layed this pushy jerk on his ass right in the Paddock with a Mike Mad Dog Curtis #32 Baltimore Colts Middle Linebacker forearm shiver. It was awesome. I was 11, and I saw the whole thing. In today's Stupid "Woke" world of Corporate Weenies that "RUN/RUIN" every, he'd be fired. That day in May of 1978, My Father was the toast of the 🐎 Horseman and good guys that day…Matt Mad Dog Sweeney

  5. Larry..my Whole town, right next to Belmont Racetrack (you can guess) 98% of the residents were staunchly against the UBS Arena at Belmont Park. They fought it tooth & nail. I told them..WHATEVER KEEP HORSERACING ALIVE in NY, I'm for…Its worked out fine. Matt Mad Dog πŸ• Sweeney

  6. Overall i have to say that i appreciate Larry's ideas and concern for the future of harness racing. I think that Marshall was a great guest, even though i didn't understand any of his catch phrases. I'll admit that my immediate reaction was that Larry's idea wouldn't work soley bc of the injury risks involved. He convinced me that waivers are the obvious way around that. "When there's a will there's a way" so to speak.

Larry, thanks again for another great episode. After hearing your quote about dementia i immediately thought to call my 86 year old grandmother just to check in. I appreciate your wisdom and your stories very much. Keep the great content coming πŸ‘πŸ‘

  7. Larry is actually quite humble. Not only did he have the original idea about horse nose strips, but he came up with the original idea for the wheel. He ran out of venture capital though, and Fred Flintstone stole his invention. πŸͺ¨
