  1. Man, I was hoping for a good pirate game. Not something that has fallen down the DnD tree and been hit by every branch on the way down. Not everything has to have animal – human hybrids involved.

  2. Fun to watch Wyrmwood (Doug) go through the “I’ve played games, I can make games 🙃” process. Less is more; playtest the hell out of your actual gameplay before you get lost in Tabaxi vs Turtle

  3. Love all the ideas for fantasy themed pirates crews, but I do think some of the wilder ideas can be saved for expanding the game later.

When I think pirates, I think of a certain lack of uniformity, including a mixture of races and people in one pirate crew. Folks that have joined from various raids at different times and from different ports.

I also think there could be special “named” pirates that could be drafted into any crew. Kind of like heroes with individual powers that could supplement what a player already has.

From a game mechanics perspective, I think it would be interesting to have the base game stay simple. Where the player’s strategy reigns supreme, not a faction’s special abilities or flaws. And then to add a level of interest and complexity, there can be powers unique to different factions (or characters, as mentioned above).

Just my two cents. Excited to see this come together regardless!

  4. personally, i think it works that the races have things they are good at, like you're talking about, and get bonuses to those things, but each deck should be a mix of all races for balancing.

  5. I own a board game company. Making a bunch of different races and abilities seems cool, but if you're looking to sctually get this game out soon, just make everyone a human with no special abilities. The special faction races and abilities could be saved for either an expansion or a version 2. Trying to balance abilities is extremely difficult and tedious, and can really put a damper on development of more important content.

  6. Here’s my opinion take it for what you will.
    Attack – beast”furries”
    Treasure- goblin
    Defense-Reptilian
    Item- bipedal fae/ human(dwarves,elves,fairies)
    Movement- sea folk/creature
    Horde/attrition- undead/steampunk

  7. No 2 pirates look the same so why not have mixed crews of different fantasy creatures based on the faction. Movement has a Turtle captain but bird folk/sea folk crew…Love this concept and cannot wait to back this kickstarter.

  8. There are a number of games with reversible player boards where you can swap between the various players having symmetric or asymmetric powers. (Eclipse: Second Dawn of the Galaxy comes to mind).

So, you could have six symmetric human pirate tribes and art, but, non-human asymmetric versions too if people want variety. So, the Red player could be Red human pirates or flip the (card, mat, paper) and Red is instead the attack-focused pirate piggies. The Green player could be the Green human pirates or flip the (card, mat, paper) and Green is instead the movement-focused pirate kitties.
