COP 28 OPEN LETTER
A group of students from South Australia have written an open letter to the Australian representatives at COP28. Sharing their concerns and frustrations about climate change action. This letter, signed colourfully by more than 20 school students from SA has been sent all the way to Dubai to land in the hands of the Aussies attending the COP28 summit. It’s an annual meeting organised by the UN to try to co-ordinate the international fight against climate change. And these students wanted their voices to be heard on the world stage. A lot of the letter focuses on how climate change impacts something called food security which is how much access someone has to enough affordable and nutritious food. You see, extreme weather can make it hard for farmers to grow produce, and makes fresh, healthy food more expensive. It also massively impacts the health of bees which pollinate a lot of what we eat. So the students hope their letter will make our representatives take notice of what matters to them.
TAYLOR SWIFT
Taylor Swift has been named Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year” for 2023! The award goes to a person or group deemed to have had the most influence on global events over the past year. And Taylor took the top spot from a group of nine finalists including Barbie, the Hollywood Strikers and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The magazine said her domination of the music charts and the global rush for tickets for her ‘eras tour’ this year means she’s pretty influential!
BOCCIA
Now we’re about to meet some kids at a school in Brisbane who have been trying out the Paralympic Sport of Boccia and are hoping other schools join in too. Check it out.
KITE SURFING
First up, to a kite surfing competition in South Africa! Competitors from around the world wrestled gale force winds to pull off some impressive maneuvers! 19 year old Andrea Principi took out this year’s top spot! And he seems pretty happy about it.
WONKA CHOCOLATE
Now to a life sized statue of Willy Wonka made out of chocolate! Unveiled in Trafalgar Square in London the sculpture took 5 weeks and 90 litres of melted chocolate to make! That’s the equivalent of about a hundred chocolate bars. And lucky the UK’s going into winter now, I can’t imagine how fast it’d melt if it was outside in Australia this time of year.
DANCING SANTA
And finally to the streets of Manila in the Philippines where Santa is breaking it down. This is Ramiro, a traffic coordinator who thought he could bring a bit of joy by dressing up on the job. And it seems motorists agree! I mean, how can you not.
