Today I’m breaking down Kendrick’s “good kid, m.A.A.d city” one track at a time. We’re going to get into the lyrics, Kendrick’s style, the production, recreate a few songs, and see the narrative of the album unfold. This is one of the most cohesive storytelling albums ever made. It’s full of darkness, tragedy, angst, questioning systems, faith, hope, and love. It’s also got some incredible beats and rhyming that’s unmatched. It’s like if an HBO series was a hip hop album.

In my opinion, Prince Paul – Prince Among Thieves, is the most cohesive story telling album ever made. Good Kid M.A.A.D City is my favorite Kendrick album, so I'm not hating. Kendrick is also my favorite mainstream artist from the 2010's. It's just Prince Among Thieves is an underground classic that people slept on, if they're more of a corporate consumer that buys trends, than a Hip Hop head that doesn't need trendy marketing to find good music.
Seriously Dr Dre IS a good producer but there IS better than him . Daz,DJ Quick, rza,DJ premier, DJ shadow any more but from west coast IS not a better . He IS a great producer and beat maker but he's not a better
🫰🫰🫰 thank you Digging the Greats
Classic album. Brilliant breakdown DTGs
I've listened to rap casually my entire life, but this was the first album that i sat down and read lyric sheets while listening to the album. It is the breathtaking how crafted the narrative is.
I really love this style of videos !
Maybe next you can analyze an album like MBDTF or TPAB
for some reason i used to hate this album but luckily it grew on me and now its one of my favorite albums
yesssss kendrick W
Thanks!
Hip Hop nut here from the UK. I don't usually comment but I'm really glad this album was broken down. One of my favourite albums ever. I listen to this album cover to cover and feel every word on this album. Modern classic and brilliant price of art. Ty again for another great video 🔥
Bravo!!!! What an excellent video that poignantly describes an even more excellent album! Thanks for that. Shame he didn't get the Grammy for it, though.
Good job breaking this down. I love a good concept album, but going the lengths to even cast some of the featurings to fit the story (and real life) is amazing.
Any plans on addressing the « reverse » concept of DAMN.?
I really wish all the best for you and this channel. You're doing an amazing job and this video is no exception. Makes me appriciate this album even more. The way you present musical knowlegde is so fluent and easy to follow – and that is not an easy task.
I'm not a commenter on anything. I have to say thank you for your channel. I have heard of most and know little about the content you are covering. I have always known it was there but didn't know the door to discover it with a great perpective. from Lamar and Nas and tribe called quest. I can really appreciate it better awesome work
DITG always ruins/makes my weekend. It shows up every single time when I should put my phone down and go to sleep, it has become a routine. I know how to avoid this but I don’t want to and there’s nothing I click on faster than @diggingthegreats when it appears! This was not an exception. GKMC might just be one of the best rap albums, but TPAB gave us a whole new lineage in hip hop and it forced us to recognize funk and jazz as living parts of the genre.
You don’t HAVE to do a breakdown of TBAP, but you kinda do now 🤞🏻
Sometimes I'll randomly just blurt out the Maya Angelou part lol
I know it sounds dumb but this album was the spark that made teenage me think about the world at large and people in other situations instead of just my small hick town i grew up in
Great breakdown Markus, GOAT'd album, gotta go listen to it again, I think the production of this album is criminally overlooked 🔥
could you please do a J Cole album like 2014 Forest Hill Drive
Brandon, we need a Digging The Greats “This is Art” shirt. Love the first two releases.
He’s NEVER said my angry adolescence divided. Fake news
"If an HBO series was a Hip-Hop album" – that's an incredible way to sum up GKMC!
