The 2011 Joplin Tornado was one of the most infamous weather events in American history and the worst tornado of the 21st Century. I go over everything in this documentary from the weather conditions that day to the devastation the tornado left behind.

  2. The reason the tornado sirens went off for the first time was for the tornado warning that was for the storm to the north of Joplin. The first tornado warning had nothing to do with the city of Joplin. The second tornado warning was for the city of Joplin. The NWS screwd up with the tornado warning by only issueing for the north side of Joplin, but the tornado came into the southwest side of Joplin.

  3. This is a well done documentary and gave a more personal look at the tragedy of the loss of Will to the Norton family. It's a shame they didn't keep people at the college that held the graduation ceremony rather than releasing everyone into the approaching storm. I've read many close call stories from survivors that were heading home from that ceremony. Hindsight is 20/20 of course.

One note that I feel I have to mention about Murphysboro, IL which was destroyed by the Tri-State tornado. They did build back and it is a charming town and the county seat in the area. My brother in law's family lives there and I was made a short visit in 2022.

  5. @01:50 gives you an idea of just how fast that thing wedged out and intensified. It nearly hid in plain sight. CAPE was damn near close to 6,000 J/kg in that area that day. The radar signatures of the parent supercell are also amongst the most sobering I have ever seen. That little "blob" looking MCS quickly became dominated by the Joplin supercell, which would later show as the tornado intensified. Later scans would show what is as textbook of a hook echo as you can find and one nasty debris ball. However, the most impressive thing is how resilient Joplin remained after this event. They have recovered and then some, upgrading much of their infrastructure and including many new designated shelters. To experience a disaster of this magnitude and come back so powerfully is a feat rarely seen in history, but also a powerful reminder of how hope keeps us moving forward.

  6. I remember exactly where I was. Me and my husband were driving home from a business meeting in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. I looked on Facebook to see my friend (living in Joplin) posting for prayers because she could see a massive tornado heading straight for Joplin.

My husband didn't say anything but for the next half hour, I stared out the window and prayed, actually feeling anxious for everyone there.

Terrified for people I didn't even know. I still cry when I watch live streams of people like Ryan Hall talking about tornadoes. This really was the worst tornado ever.

  7. What so many people remember about the Joplin, Missouri tornado is how Mike Bettes broke down sobbing on air while covering the immediate aftermath of the tornado for The Weather Channel as he was reporting live on the scene outside of St. John's Regional Medical Center. It showed people outside of the affected area that were watching The Weather Channel that Sunday night the severity of the disaster if it could bring a seasoned meteorologist such as Mike Bettes to tears. What they may not know is that following the disaster Mike had adopted a Golden Retriever who had lost her home in the storm and named her Joplyn. Aww! Sadly, she passed away from old age in 2022. While I was understandably saddened by this because I love dogs; I reconciled my sadness by reminding myself that Joplyn was adopted by a good person and lived a life surrounded by love and affection. Quite humorously there is an article about how to tell if you're watching The Weather Channel too much and one section of the article talks about how you have gotten your pets in on your enjoyment. There is a photo of Joplyn modeling the signature blue L.L. Bean windbreaker jackets worn by meteorologists for The Weather Channel when they are in the field providing coverage of severe weather situations.

  8. I was in East Texas about 12 years ago and we got a tornado warning for the very small town we were in. The funnel passed just slightly to the right in the air above us (we saw it…very strange sight) before touching down 1/4 mile past us and doing a lot of damage. We got very lucky. We were at a camping area surrounded by big pines and camper trailers. The fact that I was drinking whiskey calmed my nerves.

  9. I lived near the high school about 4 blocks(about a mile in a half from my house to the school) that was the first time I been in disaster etc. The only (kinda) disaster I been in was the '89 Oakland baseball earthquake (I didn't even lived in the Oakland bay Area I lived in Central California so we can feel the earthquake All the way from the bay Area to Central California but not that much just a little shake etc.)
