  1. One thing I think that should be in the game and make it more fun and maybe challenging is if you are near land on the map have the land be in game and have it generate some what realistic to real life so you or the ai can't just continue to run away and you could have more tactics like cornering ships and stuff like that. Also for night battles spot lights if it isn't already in game.

  2. 45:37: So it would be really hard to notice but apparently the Germans refitted the Brummer class a second time in 1939, taking off the torpedo launchers they had added earlier in the year. Not sure how many of these ships were actually refits to that standard, but the Mainz (II) was.

  3. The End of the Reichsmarine

Yomiuri shinbun, Tokyo, 6 July 1939

With the Dai-yon Kantai (4th Fleet), consisting of the two 18”/45 Mark 3 armed Yamato class battleships Musashi and Yamato escorted by the Tatashina class heavy cruisers Shirouma and Tatashina and the Tsugura class light cruisers Izumi and Matsushima moved to help the invasion of the Madeira Archipelago and found themselves engaging the last ships active in the Reichsmarine, the Wittelsbach class battleships, the Wettin and Zähringen, and five Brummer class light cruisers of various refit status, the Mainz II, Nürnberg, Ariadne II, Dresden II, and Lübeck.

The battle opened with Yamato right on top of the enemy, opening fire with her 18” guns. The German battleships were formed in one column with the five cruisers to their port. Coming from the east, the German ships turned south to open their broadsides. Yamato led her battle line to mirror the move. At first Yamato took Wettin under fire while Musashi targeted Zähringen. But when Zähringen fell back with damage all fire was put on her. With their noted weakness is crew complement, the Zähringen surrendered after taking 355 casualties out of her crew complement of 888.

Yamato now turned the battle line to chase the Wettin, targeting her with flooding hits as Yamato’s escorts targeted the German cruisers hanging off to the South-east. Their fire was put on the Dresden and she lost two engines before sinking with 819 of her 853 man crew. Lübeck was sunk next with 793 of her crew. Finally the flooding took over on the Wettin and she sank with 841 of her 888 man crew. This sadly may be the largest number of German sailors to die on a Wittelsbach class battleship.

The light cruisers Mainz, Nürnberg, and Ariadne were left. Ariadne took a hit that flooded her aft and disabled two engines. A hit through her fore deck and she sank with 802 of her 853 man crew. The battleline targeted Nürnberg because she had the lead, and she took three 18” hits through her belt. Nürnberg sank with 845 of her crew. Mainz, the second Brummer class cruiser with that name, was a 1939 refit without the torpedoes. Her superior armor only resulted in the ship breaking up and taking 742 of her crew down with her.

The Dai-yon Kantai came into the battle short of crew, not able to replenish after their battle with the Posen and Hindenburg. On top of the 131 men they were missing they suffered another 115 casualties. The Shirouma took 53 casualties, the Yamato 55, the Tatashina 6, and the Musashi 2.

844 German officers and enlisted men were pulled out of the waters.

  4. Last Battle of the Canary Islands

Yomiuri shinbun, Tokyo, 8 June 1939

The fast and heavy Dai-ichi Kantai (1st or Main Fleet), composed of the 28 knot 16”/40 armed Satsuma class battleships Satsuma, Hyūga, and Kaga, the 28 knot 14”/40 armed Karasawa class battlecruisers Karasawa and Yari, the 28 knot 14”/40 armed Kirishima class battlecruisers Kirishima and Hiei, and five 32 knot 6”/40 armed Morgami class light cruisers Katori, Yaeyama, Yasoshima, Sendai, and Tama, found itself with an opportunity to strike at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife to help bring the invasion of the Canary Islands to a successful conclusion. But the Reichsmarine sent in the two Wittelsbach battleships Kaiser and Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, the Brummer class light cruiser Thetis refitted to the 1939 standard, and the V-34 class destroyer V-35 to stop the strike on Santa Cruz.

Yaeyama sighted the first two enemy ships, the Kaiser and Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, which opened fire when they sighted the Yari, Hiei, Karasawa, Kirishima, and Hyūga. Then Yasoshima sighted the Thetis. Satsuma led Kaga and Hyūga in the first battle line. Karasaw lead Hiei, Yari and Kirishima in the second battle line which would form up closer to the enemy. Yaeyama would form the cruisers to follow the battleships. Finally the V-35 appeared, closing on the Satsuma. Satsuma immediately turned her battle line to head west to avoid any torpedoes the V-35 many have already launched.

Every ship immediately tried to remove this pawn from the board, and V-35 tried to withdraw with massive damage to her ship. She had however held her torpedo launch until Satsuma had committed to a turn, and when the torpedoes came in Satsuma was able only to turn her bow into the spread and take one forward. The hit wounded nearly fifty men. A second torpedo stuck Kaga. Satsuma made sure that V-35 wasn’t going to get any more torpedo spreads out. The V-35 sank with 116 of her 136 man crew.

Satsuma was flooding in three compartments forward and wanted to fall back in division, but was ordered to resume her station. Hyūga took the lead of the battleship line with Kaga following her. Satsuma took up station slightly off Hyūga’s starboard aft quarter. Kaiser and Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse were weaving to avoid fire from the Hyūga, Kaga, and Satsuma. The 14” armed battlecruisers were also targeting the Kaiser and Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse while the cruisers were targeting Thetis.

Kirishima took damage and also fell back. Karasawa was still leading the battlecruisers but Yaeyama took the light cruisers forward to set up a torpedo run on Kaiser and Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. After a long pounding Thetis finally sank with 944 of her 1002 man crew.

Yaeyama took a hit and was ordered to launch her torpedoes and retire. Tama now lead the light cruiser division. One of Yaeyama’s six torpedoes hit Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse on the aft belt. Tama lead her division in a turn to follow Kaiser and launched her torpedoes. Two hit on the aft belt, damaging Kaiser’s rudder. With Kaiser so damaged the whole battle line targeted her, and the German battleships surrendered with 489 casualties. In the end 329 wouldn’t make it, but 160 survived their wounds and were evacuated to the lifeboats before the Kaiser was scuttled.

The battlecruiser division led by Karasawa was right on top of Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse and now Hyūga was closing. This led to the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse cruising right past Hyūga’s bow so close that Hyūga couldn’t train her guns. Finally the rear turret swung around and Hyūga put four out of six shells into Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse at close range, only to take one 17.3” shell back through her main belt.

The damaged capital ships, led by Kirishima, also had closed on Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse like she was a bear to be baited. Surrounded, Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse surrendered after taking 400 casualties. 329 had to be left in the ship or died on the life boats, but in the end 79 of her casualties survived.

The Dai-ichi Kantai had come into the battle short 176 crew. They took another 423 casualties in this battle, 114 on Hyūga, 96 on Tama, 79 on Katori, 52 on Yasohima, 38 on Satsuma, 25 on Hiei, 15 on Kaga, 3 on Yaeyama, and two on Kirishima.

The Reichsmarine lost 1717 officers and enlisted with their two undercrewed battleships, their most recently refitted light cruiser, and their newest destroyer. 1197 officers and enlisted were pulled out of the water, received treatment, and were taken prisoner. Santa Cruz de Tenerife surrendered that day. The rest of the islands surrendered within a week.

  5. Battle in the Black Sea

Yomiuri shinbun, Tokyo, 16 May 1939

The Tsugaru class light cruiser Hirado joined the Bulgarian Navy Shimakaze class destroyer Kagerō to operate in the Black Sea and begin to bring commerce warfare to the Russian Federation. They encountered a convoy of thirteen Revel class 9.3 thousand ton 85 manned 3.4” and 2.4” armed transports escorted by the Russian Federation Navy’s Shtandart class heavy cruiser Derpt. Armed with two twin 10.3” gun turrets fore and aft, it had two triple 6.3” gun turrets super firing over the main battery, one twin 4.1” gun turret super duper firing aft, four twin 3.1” gun turrets, two next to the 4.1” gun, and two on wing platforms off the main tower. The two twin 2.1” not immediately evident. The class also carries ten underwater torpedo tubes, fore, aft, and four per side. The class has a speed of 34.4 knots and a crew of 1508 officers and enlisted men.

The Derpt was targeting the Hirado as she was putting fire on the convoy’s transports. The order of the first four transports sunk is speculative, but we are sure the convoy leader Revel sank with 71 of her crew, the Storozhevoy with 80 of her crew, the Chesma with 84 of her crew, and the Iskusnyi with 72 of her crew. Then the Zmeya surrendered with 33 casualties and the Apostol Piotr with 36 casualties. The Geogii Pobedonosets was sunk next with 80 of her crew and the Muraview-Amurski with 78. The Dekabrist surrendered after taking 34 casualties and the Moshchnyi surrendered after taking 35. The Orlan sank with 78 of her crew, the Yanchikhe with 74, and the Sviatoi Iakov with 70. In total the Russian Merchant Marine lost 122 thousand tons of shipping capacity, 825 officers and seamen killed, and another 280 which had to be rescued from the Black Sea.

The Derpt finally noticed the Kagerō and hit her with a 3.1” shell. With her mission fulfilled to distract the Deprt, the Kagerō was ordered to retire. Once she had finished with the convoy the Hirado attempted to distract the Derpt, hitting her multiple times with her 6” guns. Unfortunately while Derpt might have engaged Hirado with her 10.3” guns her 3.1” guns were doing a fine job of tearing up Kagerō. The Kagerō sank with 105 of her 117 man crew, with 12 taken prisoner by the Russians.

The Hirado took 14 casusalties. The Derpt took 357 according to the Russian Federation Navy.

  6. Investigation of the Samidare

Yomiuri shinbun, Tokyo, 4 May 1939

The Azores Station Tsugaru class light cruiser Ioshima, the Abukuma class light cruiser Yoshino, and the destroyer Samidare, lead ship of her class, went on one more mission before Ioshima took up her new station at Dakhla. They found a convoy of three Frederick der Grosse class 12.9 thousand ton 125 manned four single 4.2” and six single 1.9” gun armed transports escorted by the light cruiser Rostock, the light cruiser Graudenz, and the destroyer V-14 west of the Madeira Archipelago.

The three ships were ordered to close on the enemy escorts independently when their Sonar officers reported the enemy launching torpedoes. The reaction of the Yoshino and the Isoshima was to turn to starboard. The reaction of the Samidare was to counter-launch at the enemy. Isoshima and Yoshino each caught one of Samidare’s torpedoes. Isoshima took 56 casualties. Yoshino took 33. Samidare was ordered to report to the Station Commander at Ponta Delgada for disciplinary action.

Though both Ioshima and Yoshino were damaged and flooding, they continued the mission. As they closed the V-14 attempted to intercept Yoshino, but the cruisers sank the German destroyer, being in a anti-destroyer mood, with 102 of her 109 man crew.

Ioshima and Yoshino were now able to target the German cruisers, and the Rostock got hit first. The unrefitted cruiser couldn’t stand up to the 6” shells of the Japanese cruisers and sank with 835 of her 853 man crew.

Graudenz tried to turn away from Yoshino, but she was quickly taking hits. With flooding spreading forward through her engineering spaces the Graudenz sank with 772 of her 853 man crew.

The chase was on for the convoy, and the two cruisers quickly brought the transports in range, sinking the Kaiser Barbarossa with 116 of her 125 man crew. Wuppertal followed, going down with 110 men. Finally the convoy leader Frederick der Grosse was sunk with 104 of her crew. In total the German Merchant Marine lost 38.6 thousand tons of shipping, 330 officers and seamen killed, and 45 taken prisoner. The Reichsmarine lost 1709 officers and sailors killed and 106 captured.

The Reichsmarine inflicted one casualty on the Yoshino. The two cruisers lost a total of 90 men.

  7. 11:34. Armour-scheme of the Derpt. Game gives armour and resistance bonus because of the Citadel V choice, even when the armour on the inner belts and decks is set to 0 (besides the 0.8"armour on first belt). This is an Arcade-game pretending to be a simulator.
Same with "hull resistance". It is the armour that causes the resistance to go up, not the choice of hull.
